Mercedes Admits Quality Problems - FINALLY!
February 9, 2004
DaimlerChrysler has set a target of 2006 for regaining its standing atop the quality charts, its top car executive says. Juergen Hubbert, board member responsible for Mercedes-Benz and Smart, told Automotive News Europe the carmaker is "working like hell" to correct the glitches that have plagued the electronic control systems in Mercedes-Benz vehicles. Mercedes-Benz spokesman Geoff Day said there is no specific quality survey or timeline the company is citing as a target and attaining No. 1 status is more of an internal commitment. Speaking at a JD Power and Associates industry conference, Hubbert said: "We have bugs in the system. We have to learn the right way to organise electronics and have the same reliability standards." He quickly added, "Who is in the lead always has the biggest problems." Mercedes-Benz has fared badly in recent owner surveys, such as the AutoMarxx report prepared by the ADAC, Germany's largest automotive club, or the JD Power & Associates durability study. But a website run by disgruntled customers, Mercedes-Benz-usa.com, also has appeared. The website has developed a "Mercedes Benz Problem Resolution Guide" for US Mercedes customers who are unsatisfied with their cars or with the carmaker's employees. Mercedes-Benz's disappointing results are mainly associated with quality problems and electronics failures. I like the idea that the dissatisfied owners have made the website to tell M-B what to fix. That's cool. I've not visited the site, yet, but it sounds like a good idea to me!

In the shop I work at, we had two seperate MB ML's come in(both 320s I think) that already had rust on them on the bottom of the hood, on the underside.........it was fucking ridiculous

I have a friend who's a parts manager at a MBZ dealer. Tells me the buy back rate at his store is rediculous. They bought back a S500 and the service manager purchased it for $35k before it was labled a lemon. They were never able to duplicate the problem but they bought back anyways.
The bulk of the problems were with E class cars and the voice navagation/control system. MBZ just didn't know how to fix them and blamed the vendor of the system (Bosch I think). They've since figured it out but by then the CSI scores were already in the toilet. Quote:
With all that I still plan on trading my C280 for a newer model. Maybe not that new

Damnm, SL's seem to smell like cat piss. I would refuse to leave the dealer without either a free fix or someone's head on a pike if I dropped over 100k on a car that reeks. My other favorite is the trunk that won't open if it's over 85°. |

There are several complaints about the transmission dropping into neutral under load.
I rode in some guy's 2001 S430 (almot brand new at the time), and it did that when he gunned it at 45 mph or so. It nearly redlined and the car did absolutely nothing. Of course he wouldn't admit his precious Mercedes was having transmission problems, so he tried to say he bumped the shifter (funny considering both hands were on the wheel when it acted up) as he frantically shifted between neutral and drive for about 10 seconds before it started working again. |

I have a '99 C280 that I bought used a year and a half ago. Only problems I've had with the car is a drivers side mirror that make a strange rattle when I close the door and a creaky door check arm on the right rear door. I really want another one but after what I've heard I may go with another used one. Really would like a '99-00 CLK or E class. Reading those complaints make me think twice about a new one.
On the other hand I work at a dealer. I know what it's like to hear from dissatisfied customers. Some people have no real problem and just want out of a car they really couldn't afford or just didn't like it after they took it home. They just want a way to get out of the car and they see the lemon law as a way out. Your more likely to hear from a unhappy customer than a happy one.

I work for Mercedes Benz and I will say that some of the posts I have read are HALARIOUS!!
The main problems as of late are software issues on the new cars especially the new E class. It's not the older models that are giving MBZ the problems it's the new models with all the shit they put on them......tooooo many programs for the programmers and they can't get their shit together. Hey...when you build the best and the safest cars on the road you're going to have problems, but when you start to OVER BUILD them...you're going to have MANY PROBLEMS. The real problem is that Mercedes is trying to put affordable MBZ'z on the road for everyone and they're FUCKING THEMSELVES as they travel down that road. The funny thing about all this is now we have customers coming out of the woodworks saying they have LEMONS and want us to buy them back after they've been driving them for two to four years with barely any problems except now that maybe their radio or some other small thing is broke they call it a lemon...LMFAO. I see and look at all the buybacks at our dealership and from other dealerships at the auction each month and I can promise you I have yet to come across an S Class that had the transmission problems described above, or hoods rusting underneath....the main problems is the computers on the cars and the programs running them...THEY SUCK!! I'm not defending them and hell these cars pay me a nice little salary each month....a very nice salary I will tell you all a funny story though(sorry I can't mention any names) but one star had their E-500 bought back by MBZ..not because it was a lemon but because it was one of the E classes that could not be retrofitted with the navigation system as promised when the new body E classes were first sold and told to the customers that MBZ would add the Navi system later. Well anyhoo...this star..NOT A BIG ONE in my book...told a person that she does a show with that we did a dealer buy back so this PRICK FUCK(and he really is) called us and demanded we buy his (not even an E class) back after he's been driving with no problems for 14 months now and when we said "NO" he got pissed because he felt he was a bigger star then the person who he works with who's car we bought back. I wish I could tell you HIS name, but I value my job and the money but if you read real closely you'll figure out who this DICK is. Anyhoo....if you want to purchase one of these buybacks at a really LOW price...let me know and I'll get you one at auction. My buddy bought the new E-55 that is going for 10k over sticker for the low low low price of 51K and he's had no problems yet. Have a nice day
