There is a theory that the "best" music is whatever was popular when you were 13 years old.

  2. There may be something to that. Looked up the top 100 for my year: The Beatles, The Doors, The Turtles, Jefferson Airplane, The Hollies, The Monkees, The Supremes, The Who, Electric Prunes, Strawberry Alarm Clock, Sam and Dave.... whew! Gotta burn a mix CD!

  4. I just looked at a list of hits from when I was 13 and I can definitely say that, no, the best music was NOT late 1990 to late 1991.

And because I don't know how to embed, a link to one of the fine songs that came out during my 13th year:

I moved to Tacoma just as the Seattle Music scene was beginning to explode. I swear that the rock stations in Seattle only had 2 bands they played...Nirvana, and Pearl Jam. It's only recently that I have been able to listen them and enjoy it.

Me too. Also, I can remember what songs were from the 90s and what were from the late 80s and what were from the last 10 years. Mind you, I have trouble remembering what happened yesterday. I also have come to the realisation that what I know about popular music from the last 30 years is in the region of the square root of f*ck all.

Yes, "I Touch Myself". A one hit wonder that deserved a follow-up about toys.

    I find myself still waiting.

Wasn't it in the 90's when MTV stopped actually offering any music videos? Except for rap, maybe. My interest in what was current musically was already beginning to wane by then anyway.

No, no, they were playing Soundgarden too, though not as much until Superunknown came out, and then it was "Black Hole Sun" all day, every day.

One of my favorite '90s songs that everyone seems to hate nowadays...

I have fond memories of driving my daughter as a toddler to daycare while playing this song, and hearing her in the back (in her car seat) singing the main chorus.

  14. Minus the peaches song, these are all on my mp3 player. It's so obvious looking at my playlist that I came of age in the 90's.

Bad song or not, somehow they're all attached to various pieces of nostalgia associated with my youth, and the transition through puberty into being a teenager.

I still listen to Ace of Base.

    Yeah, me too.

There were a lot of bad songs though. I can't even remember the names of them, partially because they were probably stupid names sung by stupid named bands like Third Eye Blind or Dishwalla. There was a lot of bad songs by the Lillith Fair burn-your-bra-and-grow-out-your-armpit-hair women singers of the 90's as well, like Meredith Brooks' Bitch or anything by Jewel. There was a lot of bad music in the 1990's.

    I you talking about this:

I'm not sure you'd call Divinyls one hit wonders, but then they are Aussies, I'm an Aussie...

Well, here in the US we got this gem (and I mean that sincerely) but I never heard anything else from them. Then again, like I mentioned, I was starting to lose interest in popular music around then.
