My advice was going to be to expect that if she is Mexican, then her family is also most likely Mexican, but it seems you have that one covered. If the Spanish you know is Tex-Mex, then you already know that Mexican Spanish dialects are quite distinct from dialects in South America and Spain, and probably not what they teach in schools. Up here in the Northeast I took 5 years of Spanish and it was a split between Norther Castillan and Venezuelan; I can keep up with most South American and European speakers, but put me in front of someone from Mexico or a Mexican TV broadcast and I'm lost.

 

That's interesting as we have similar formal education in Spanish. I moved to SoCal for a number of years and found Spanish language-TV and live convo pretty easy to pick up once you get used to the fast pace and in at least the case of naturalized Mexicans, their inclination towards mixing English with Spanish in one sentence.
My MIL for example, would say "Mija, cierre los drapes," no matter if she was speaking to a Spanish speaker or not.

 

Based on my limited experience, the mixed Spanglish seems typical among first generation immigrants from a lot of places and their children. For example, I was once talking to a man after he was in a bad car accident outside of my grandmother's house to ask if he and his wife were OK, and only toward the end of the conversation did I realize that we he had been speaking half English, half Spanish, and we had understood each other perfectly. I know he was an immigrant because he showed his green card to the officer who responded.

 

As I learned last night:

If she wants to go Latin dancing, just know that no amount of distance running or tossing iron is an acceptable substitute. Your hips will burn.

Not yet. We are still kind of trying to decide if this is a relationship or just some fun. I think its starting to get serious which is fine with me. Monogamy is a new thing to me and I think I'm digging it. I really enjoy my time with her, which is also kind of new for me as well (enjoying time spent with a female outside of sex, sorry if that's offensive to any ladies reading this, just being honest). Her mom comes to visit her pretty regularly so I'm bound to meet her sooner or later.
