Well, bourbon is aged, obviously. Maker's Mark only has one brand, and refuses to buy from any other distillery. So they can only sell what they put away ~7 years ago or whatever it is that they age it. Other brands deal with that problem by adjusting their product mix or supplimenting their supply from the outside. Maker's Mark refuses to do either, so they were basically just going to water it down a tiny bit. Instead, they'll just run out as they run out and can make more.

I'm betting they are putting away a LOT more bourbon these days. :p

Bourbon is my favorite when I want to liquor up and like most of you, I drink Makers. A couple of weeks ago I had what is my current favorite cocktail:
East Disillery's Cherry Bomb bourbon, with a sage/celery syrup, and all sorts of other good liquidities, but Im not sure what all.
It was sorta like bourbon with fruit cherries (not candy) and Dr Brown's Celery soda. Sounds awful, but it had good sweet/savory chops.

I don't know about other people here, but I absolutely hated the bacon infused beer I had. It quite literally had a 72 hour aftertaste. It was a real challenge to keep that campfire-'n-meat flavored swill down.

...and this is coming from a guy that has eaten some pretty disgusting things in his life.

I haven't really followed this thread because I don't drink bourbon. Heck, I don't really drink whiskey that much at all (though I think this might be changing for the better).

However, last night I had a Maker's Mark for the first time. I liked it! (Though it was nearly $2 more per drink than that proddy whiskey I was drinking....)

When I began reading this post, I started shaking my head in shame at you.

    Then it got better.

  9. My brother gave me a bottle of Angel's Envy bourbon on Friday evening. I opened it this afternoon. Bourbon should never taste this good or be this easy to drink. Or should it? Of course, it should! Holy crap, this is sooooo good.

My friends who drink Bourbon do like the Angel's Envy, but they loooooooooooove Blanton's. I have no opinion because I'm a single malt guy.

BG, if you want to taste some sublime stuff, shoot me a message and I'll get you started.

blanton's. it has this carmel thing that happens in the finish. really fine.

lately, i've been interested in rye whiskey. i really like sezerac, but it's difficult to find in these remote climes. so bulliet, mostly because it's good and has been on sale for a few weeks.

    single malts, loquitur? do tell...

I like both Angel's and Blanton's. Depends on my mood.

RB, re rye whiskey: a friend gave me a bottle of Dad's Hat Pennsylvania Rye Whiskey. It tastes like a cross between Canadian and Bourbon, sort of a mild, somewhat sweeter version of Crown Royal. It's not bad at all. It has a fedora on the label.

As for single malt, I have one word: GlenDronach. If you haven't had it, you're missing one of life's great delights. It's hard to find, though. If I can't get that, then I "settle" for Glenlivet, Glenrothes, Cardhu, Glengoyne or stuff like that. I stay away from Laphroaig and Talisker, both of which taste like ashtrays.

Some Sam's Clubs now carry barrels of Single Barrel Jack Daniels.

By that, I mean you get an entire barrel.

This weekend I might be sampling Rowan's Creek for the first time. I'll let you know how it is.

It's becoming a habit for us to grab a random bottle of bourbon or bourbon-style whiskey to taste with friends. As it stands, the Elijah Craig 12 is perhaps the favorite in the less than $30 range. We've tried Eagle Rare, Elmer T. Lee, Maker's Mark, Evan Williams Single Barrel, Four Roses, Buffalo Trace, Jefferson's, Sam Houston, some local Oregon "bourbons," and some others I'm sure I'm forgetting. I would say Buffalo Trace is perhaps the best value. At this point in our tasting, we're not really willing to spend outrageous amounts of money as most of us don't have much to spare. Are there any we've missed? I'm curious to know.

Blanton's is my favorite and you can sometimes get on for $45, but I don't know any under $30.

Just don't drink bourbon on a rotating bar. It's worse than coming off a boat. Ha ha.
