Food Whisk(e)y (especially bourbon) - yeah!!!!

Discussion in 'Tilted Food' started by Craven Morehead, Aug 28, 2011.

  1. Aside from bourbon and water, a mint julep might be the only drink that a Kentuckian would tolerate made with bourbon. Maybe because it's a bourbon and water with some sugar and mint. They are tasty, but I was taught to drink bourbon straight or with only water and or ice. I feel as if I would be turning my back on my Kentucky ancestors if I drank it any other way.

I typically only drink it straight, at room temp.
    Ice is blasphemy.
But there is something sublimely comforting about a good julep.

I picked up a bottle of Buffalo Trace today. It was on sale at the liquor store for a price I just could not resist. I haven't opened it yet, but it is calling my name...

I have some of that myself, though mine has been opened. It's not my favorite, but it is definitely solid, especially in that price range. :)

I can't find Pappy's anywhere this year. My stash is dwindling and I don't see it being replenished any time soon. Boo!

Thanks. I was actually eyeing some in a liquor store once, and was about to google it on my phone, when some lady walked up and grabbed the last bottle right in front of me. Literally seconds before I was going to. Then I heard the store owner rave to her about how awesome the choice was. :p

However, I just found out I may have a secret angel with a line on a bottle of Pappy's for me. We'll see if the store still has any in stock.

We love Bulleit Bourbon! Unfortunately, for some strange reason, it's not available here anymore. Thankfully we stocked up on our vacation in Ontario, so we're set through the New Year. I've been adding 1/2 oz of bourbon to my Cruzan 7 Spice Rum and Coke; adds a little kick of flavour.

Has anyone seen these before? They're Stainless Steel ice cubes, filled with freezer gel.

Alright, this would be the place to settle a friendly debate from work:

Buddy of mine and I were at Hooter's (classy, I know), drinking piss-beer (classier, I know), trading war stories and talking about the inevitable zombie apocalypse.

    Inevitable.

    Zombies.

Anyway, given that paper currency would quickly become worthless after the initial shock to social systems and that it would seem to be more prudent to stockpile medical supplies, hand tools and barter goods than crates of shotgun shells... what kind of bourbon would be useful to stockpile? I mean, everybody likes bourbon.

His idea was to stockpile a couple of bottles of household-name high end stuff to bring out when you needed to seal the deal on something big ("I wanna buy your truck." or "I wanna buy your daughter.") or wanted the C-note equiv for general bartering. My idea is to keep a case of mid-range household-name bottles because value is relative. My logic is you can always double up and that, at a certain point, booze is booze, especially if it's the end of the world and your neighbors are shambling down the street like a Red Bull'd Remixer after a 24-hour dance party, groaning for the delicious innards of your very skull.

    What do you guys think?

Since you've thrown my all-time-favorite drink (Vodka+RedBull) out of the equation, I'd go for crates upon crates of mid-range Jim Beam's.

They're fairly cheap, everyone knows it, and it's bourbon.

Not like the post-Zombie apocalypse negotiations will include a debate on the finer nuances and smells of low-fat tuna sashimi and high-class whiskey.

Man-leg roast and Jim Beam's sounds much more realistic.

  12. Makers, decently priced for a smooth bourbon.

So I could buy a case of Maker's Mark and squirrel it away? Sounds like solid advice from an expert.

  14. I think you should buy a case and drink it. This is good stuff.

Bourbon, whiskey, scotch. My taste buds can't tell the effin' difference. They're all horrible. I stick to clear booze. Gin, rum, vodka.

But I do enjoy being kissed by a man with a fresh hint of dark liquor on his breath.

    Go figure.

My taste buds can tell the difference, and generally I prefer bourbon over Scotch over Canadian whiskey.

Lately I've been drinking my way through a bottle of Buffalo Trace. I don't know that I'd recommend it for bartering with, because it isn't as recognizable, but perhaps that makes it valuable for personal drinking.

I have a very sensitive palate when it comes to alcohol.
Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on who's buying), with bourbon,
I can't handle anything less than Woodford Reserve or my all time favorite, Blanton's.
I can't stomach anything peated when it comes to the rest of the whisky/whiskey families.
Scapa, Jura, and the Balvenie 12 year (Doublewood) and up.
I've gotten so sick off others, and they tend to send me into a very angry place with the cheaper brands.
Kinda like rum... not sure what it is about those two liquors that makes me so sensitive.
But I can tackle a bottle of tequila like a rugby player and come out smiling and filthy on the other side.

Nah. I don't drink them often, because of the price.
Year 4.5 of the PhD will drive anyone to drink. ;)
