Where do your pets sleep?

After about 5 years of talking, we finally talked my in laws into crating their 4 dogs when they are not at home. A scotty, a westie and chihuahua and a small mutt. Life has gotten much easier at their house.

So many people superimpose their own feelings onto their pets. They think that putting a dog into a kennel is like putting them in jail and the dog is going to be sad and wonder what they did wrong. Once a dog is crate trained, they will go there voluntarily for a sense of security. When a dog is kenneled while you are asleep or when you are not at home, it takes away all of the nervousness and anxiety that they have by being without their pack leader. It's hard to talk a lot of people into that though.

I dunno, dogs have their own personalities. Molly has always hated crates. Hard to tell whether it's due to her size, her fur (heat sensitive), or socialization; but she seriously resents the crate. My wife's Golden used to love his.

Molly had 2-3 accidents as a puppy and none since. She understands that she isn't a lap dog and the command "go lay down". I see no reason to insist on a crate.

I agree. My big dog has never like crates. When he was a puppy we tried all sorts of things to crate train him and all of them ended in disaster (picture poop EVERYWHERE). I could never figure out why he didn't like crates but he does just fine without one. The few times he has had an "accident" in the house were by the back door where he goes outside so he was clearly trying but no one was home to let him out. It seems to come down to the personality of the dog.

    We have 3 beagles (Beagle-Border Collie, 13" Beagle, Beagle-Terrier)

We've set up our home to be very casual & comfortable.
And they sleep where they want.

When they are on their own, usually it's on the couch, chase or couch by the window. Or the bed.
But if it's when we are home, then there's a pattern.

The oldest, sleeps on the pillows above our heads inbetween us.
The middle one (and a living sleeping pill for humans) tends to curl up to me inbetween my legs under the blanket.
The youngest, she goes under the blanket inbetween us.

Believe it or not, it's not crowded...I guess the wife & I are just part of the pack curled up with each other.
Yes, we spoil them...wouldn't have any other way.

Three cats; two brothers now eight, and an unplanned 'adoption' now one and a half. The latter we would let sleep with us each and every night, as he just curls up on the chair in the bedroom and sleeps without waking us, but the brothers are a different story... one has to check that I'm awake every hour or so by pawing my face - and the other (nervous and highly strung) has a habit of pissing on clothes..!

Wait a sec... is that like a product description or model number or something?

Are we bragging or something?? ;)

    Actually, she's a pure-bred beagle...just another type.
Think of a beagle, but with shorter legs...and a touch more breadth.

Cute as an angel, big brown eyes...hair soft as down...heart of gold
But strong as an ox and can eat thru steel.

Funny thing is, it's harder walking her than the others because she's so strong.
She can yank me around and I'm a big guy of some build.
She sees a squirrel or rabbit and I've got a true tug of war going on.

  11. My puppy, and dogs in the past, typically sleep wherever they want... usually the bed w/ me if no one else is here (or if they just don't care). At my feet during the day while I'm working, etc...

I'm a dog guy, and I'm generally against crating animals... however, I have a crate (rarely used), and have cordoned off another area for my puppy to feel safe in (a pen between walls, desk, and bed headboard, but with a rolling stand I can use to close it off).

My puppy is still being house broken, so, we have issues from time-to-time, but, not on the bed (thankfully), and, I've never had issues w/ dogs being allowed their freedom. When she does have an accident, she usually comes and notifies me, then goes to one of these two places voluntarily (while I hiss & spit about her knowing better while cleaning... she knows... but she's a puppy... and then goes a couple of days w/ out accidents). Only problem I got now is that I know my puppy (female) is going to take issue with anybody I date in the future.

Our dog is a great Dane. She sleeps on a dog bed next to ours on my SO's side. If it rains, she moves over to my side, still on the floor. One cat sleeps on the bed, usually by my feet. The other cat is still adjusting to living here, I am not exactly sure where he sleeps yet. He has a fondness to the oversized bean bag chair in the basement, he may sleep there.

I have a medium/small dog, she has slept next to me in bed since the day we had her at five weeks old (rescued from a drug dealers shed ) she is never more than five feet away from me at all times. I have two boys and never really wanted a girl. so we all call her my 'hairy daughter'.
Before my cat passed away at 15 yrs, he slept wherever he laid his fluffy ass. He's been gone two years now and I still miss him.
We also have seven chickens but due to their insistence on crapping every few seconds, they stay in their coop. I'm pretty sure if they could they would also sleep in the bed as they try to get through the dog flap and into the kitchen.

Two dogs: one a 13 lb. Schipperke and the other, 'rescued from a drug dealer's house' is a 30-lb. mix of I really don't know. At night, they both sleep on the floor with my son, one on each side of him. (He refuses to sleep in a bed.) It's odd I know, but all I can do is make sure the bedding gets washed regularly. Durin the day, the big one, "Obi" sleeps under my bed which is right next to my work station. He follows my every move. The small one, "Raven," is more antsy and roams about, generally settling in the coolest area she can find which is as far away from the other dog as possible.

We have four cats - two older cats that are 9 and 8 years old, and two new kittens that are 11 weeks old. The older cats sleep indoors wherever they want. Since we just got the new kittens about 7 weeks ago (I ran over one of them along a stretch of deserted country highway on the way to work one morning, but that's a different story for a different day), we haven't gotten the new and old cats acclimated together yet. So, we're keeping the kittens out on a screened porch that's at a second-floor level. It would be the ideal place to keep them indefinitely while we gradually ease them into the household except for the fact that coyotes, foxes, and bobcats routinely prowl around our house every night. Therefore, I sleep on a long porch swing on the porch with the kittens every night. They stay locked up in a little cage overnight while I sleep on the swing as their night guard.

    Those kittens are ADORABLE!

Ruff is sleeping downstairs more often these days. I expect this all will change after the move is over and we are established in our new abode. Ruff will probably be sleeping on our bed every night at that point.

My black monster sleeps outside in the backyard. He has his own corner with a covered metal cage that is always open unless we have customers on the premises.

Dumbo has made it a habit to attack everyone with furious anger that isn't me or directly related with me. Great as a guard dog, but scares the shit out of customers.

My dog would sleep on my bed, curled up against my legs most nights. If my cat decided to sleep on the bed, the dog was usually relegated to the floor. Rarely, on cold nights, they might snuggle together on the bed with me. They got along fine, but there was no doubt the cat ruled the house; about once a month or so he would have to smack down the dog - hisss, swat, yelp, peace.
