Anyone pick up Black Ops II yet? I am on the fence, those games are great but I always get that "been there done that" feeling.

yeah, it's my favorite one since the first modern warfare. at least there is a population for pc to play with. i reinstalled mw2 and black ops a couple months ago and there's not a many playing.

it's more of the same of course. i guess it's worth the price for new maps and new futuristic weapons.

There's a fucking autumn sale now?

I liked two annual sales. It made it easier to resist temptation.

Magpie's going to be so mad at me.

I'm just hoping E. doesn't notice. He's wasting enough time with Minecraft as it is. It's fair, though. I play WoW while he plays Minecraft and vice-versa.

they go between 33 and 80% off and it's usually on a lot of popular games that haven't been discounted yet or don't go on sale much. people look forward to them once they've experienced them. i almost always find something. i'm hoping torchlight 2 goes 5 or 10 bucks off; i still need that one.

It's worth noting that Steam sales usually take the format of having two types of deals -- daily deals which are generally 75-90% off, and deals that run the duration of the sale for 33-50% off. If you're looking for a specific game and it's in the latter group, it's worth waiting until the last day to see if it gets included in the daily deals before buying it.

....And on the first day XCom: Enemy Unknown is on sale. 33% off. Damn it, now I have to buy it.

    Also notable:

Star Wars: KotOR II for $2.49. If you liked the first one, this one is definitely worth picking up for the price of a cup of coffee. In it's base form it's a hot mess of bugs and cut content, but there's a mod called The Sith Lords Restored Content Mod which fixes most of the glaring issues. Available here:

TSL Restored Content Mod 1.6 Mod Download, Knights of the Old Republic 2 Mods

Limbo is $2.50. Buy it. You will like it. I have yet to find someone who's played Limbo and not liked it. Buy it. Do it. Go now.

There are some indie games available here:

    Welcome to Steam

Most of them for $2.50. World of Goo is fantastic, as is Cave Story. I haven't played Sanctum, but it's gotten good reviews. Honestly, if you're looking for indie games (and you should be, many of the best games I've played over the past couple of years have been indie games) the Humble Bundle is a much better deal. But, y'now, they're there if you want them.

Borderlands 2 and Torchlight 2 are both on sale. Do not buy them yet. They'll be avaialable at no higher than their current price for a week. They may end up in a daily deal -- I would've said it was unlikely because they're still rather new, but I would've said the same about XCom and we can see how that went. Also worth keeping an eye on is Endless Space; there aren't very many space 4x games coming out these days, but Endless Space is one of them. In brief, this is the game Master of Orion 3 should have been.

I think that's all for now.

on a side note, i just ran into this utility and it looks great. i'm going to try it this weekend. it shuts down non critical processes while you play games so you get more performance out of resource gobblers. good timing to crutch up my aging nvidia 460.

I see Civ V is on sale. I've been playing Civ IV. I'm trying to decide between the base game and the Game of the Year edition. Thoughts?

Eh. I actually didn't like a lot of the changes made for Civ V, but if you're going to get it get the GotY. To be fair, I haven't played it with Gods and Kings, and according to what I've heard that improves things pretty drastically.

EDIT: Actually, it looks like the GotY doesn't include Gods and Kings. So that's not really a factor. As far as GotY editions go it's actually kind of lackluster, so I'm going to change my answer. Unless you desperately want one or more of the included civs, I wouldn't bother.

Also, it's not a daily deal. Wait for it to be a daily deal. I'm pretty sure it'll come up at some point.

Crap. I shouldn't have looked. This game looks damn fine. I'm a huge 4X fan, and I remember Master of Orion fondly.

Not part of the Steam sale, but if you want to get some MoO in, gog.com has MoO 1+2 for $6. Note that's regular price, so there's no rush on buying it. All gog.com games will run on modern systems -- they're usually packaged up with dosbox or something similar.

    Master of Orion 1+2 for download $5.99 - GOG.com

Ha, they also have Alpha Centauri. Another good one.

I'm not actually particularly fond of playing retro games. I prefer playing spiritual descendants of great games or games that pay homage to great games. In the case of MoO, I found much satisfaction in playing Galactic Civilizations II: Dread Lords as a replacement. I wonder how Endless Space compares to that one. I might have to look into it. I'm not sure what became of GCII... (I think it was a timed demo that I played the shit out of, actually.)

UPDATE: It doesn't matter, the ultimate edition is on for $13!!! Save 33% on Galactic Civilizations II: Ultimate Edition on Steam

Galactic Civilizations II is the other good modern space 4x. I would recommend either. Or even both.

But at the risk of repeating myself to often, wait for a daily deal, or the last day.

I should probably pick up GCII. But I run the risk of forgetting if I wait until the last day. I will bide my time for now anyway.

I should look more into the gameplay of Endless Space.

    Fucking UPDATE:

Arrgh... If you want RTS instead, the same company that did GCII put out a game called Sins of a Solar Empire. Both of them are on sale now at 50% off:

Save 50% on Sins of a Solar Empire: Trinity on Steam
Save 50% on Sins of a Solar Empire: Rebellion on Steam

I played a demo of one and it was very well done. I didn't get it because I'm not usually that keen on RTS. I'm a turn-based kind of guy. (Though this one I would probably like.)

    I hate Steam. Haaaate it.
