Recipe What is the recipe you are known for?

Discussion in 'Tilted Food' started by Borla, Aug 4, 2011.

  1. I actually used to make a pretty good Pad Thai that my boyfriend at the time LOVED and would always request that I make it for dinner. He was not an adventurous eater, so I was amazed that he even tried it. I wouldn't say it was perfect, but it was good. I lost the recipe in the breakup and haven't been able to find anything remotely close. Since I also lost the friends who gave me the recipe in the breakup, I can't get the original.

my issue really is the mise en place for all the little toss in items. Maybe I'm just over thinking it and just needs to go back to the basics and make it work out the way I need to.

Oh and Mee Krob, it's like 20,000% profit.

  3. The grocery store I went to for the ingredients didn't have bean sprouts, so my BF just got green beans. He liked it better that way so from then on, we got green beans. I protested at first, but after awhile I just didn't care.

So just go with the flow and make something that you like. Who do you have to impress?

I do agree, I like to fudge it for sake of making it when ingredients aren't readily available. I've made a kosher version of Beef with Basil which is without fish sauce. It is replaced with soy sauce to give the salty flavor.

  7. The original recipe for the pad thai I made called for fish sauce, but I replaced it soy sauce to make it vegetarian. I have no problems with eggs, so I didn't omit those.

And I feel bad for taking over this thread...sorry people. Carry on.

I can't give out my recipes. Sorry. Cause then you'd have no reason to come to my restaurant.

You kidding? They bottle the sauces of Patsy's, Rao's, and other Italian joints. People still go there in droves though I've never been.

Note I didn't give out my recipe.

I can't go to cook out without my friends asking me to make some of my burgers. My best friend calls them a religious experince. Very simple to make.
Some worcester sauce, a packet of Liptons onion soup mix, and a pound of ground beef. Mix it all together in a bowl, make your paddies, and cook to your liking. Some pepperjack cheese on top really sets them off. I've been playing around with a couple new burger mixes, but haven't had a chance to try them out on the guys yet.

Will, that's a generous offer to make, but I'd never get around to making any of those recipes that you listed.
If the others want to see the videos, then it would be worth your trouble, but you don't have to do it just for me.
In fact, it might be a good idea for another thread.

Also, +1 internet for the "The 13th Warrior" quote.

  13. Yes, I'm kidding. Although I actually don't have any of my recipes written down.

I used to make a maple-cinnamon fruit dip for all of my work functions. It was completely vegan and tofu based, but seriously, EVERYONE loved it. Even Eden's family loved it when I made for one of the holiday gatherings (Thanksgiving, I think), and they are hardcore "meat must be in everything" kind of people.

I use the following recipe for a base, but I end up using WAY more brown sugar, quite a bit extra maple syrup, and a touch more cinnamon:

    (1) 12 oz package of soft or silken tofu
    1/4 cup maple syrup
    3/4 tsp ground cinnamon

Seriously, that's it. Blend them all together in a blender or food processor. Using the exact recipe means it still has a strong "tofu-y" taste, which is why I fool around with it a bit. Add, taste, add, taste, etc. It's very easy to overdo the maple syrup, so I only add a little at a time.

I usually serve it with strawberries, green and red grapes, and raspberries. I bet apples would be really good, too.

The two things I'm starting to get known for (both are stupidly easy - betraying my ineptitude in the kitchen)

Pork chops in mushroom sauce with rice

    - Step 1: Acquire pork; brown in pan
    - Step 2: Put that shit in a baking dish, cover in mushroom sauce, cover dish with tinfoil; bake it for 20-30 minutes
    - Step 3: Make rice
    - Step 4: Combine FTW

    Baking delicious, delicious bread.

    Ingredients
    - 3 cups of water
    - 1 1/2 Tablespoons of Coarse Salt
    - 1 /1/2 Tablespoons of Yeast (2 packets)
    - 1-2 Tbs. honey
    - 6 1/2 cups of flour

Activate the yeast till it's bubbly w/ the water/sugar. Mix the dry stuff together. Add the wet stuff, knead till it's springy. Don't over-knead that fucker, or I'll slap you. Separate into two loaves. Let rise two hours. Bake at 450 for half an hour. Don't forget a little dish of water so the crust gets crusty. Enjoy with oil/vinegar with a glass of red wine.

Been a while sense I made it, but someone reminded me how much they loved my chicken in salsa. Another super easy dish to make. Get some chicken (I normally just grab a huge package of legs and/or thighs) Brown chicken in a huge pan (I also add about 3 or 4 heads of diced garlic to brown up with it, but that is optional) and then turn the heat down to low once the chicken is all browned, cover in salsa of your choice, and let simmer for a couple hours. Stir it ever 10 or 15 minutes, and good to go. The chicken comes out so tender it falls off the bone.

Nobody has ever asked me to cook a particular meal for them. :(

When I was at university I cooked oven chips, and a Fray & Bentos Beef and Onion pie for a Chinese girl and told her that this was the traditional meal that English family's ate for Sunday lunch

I think she believed me (or at least wasnt sure enough to call me a liar), but then again we never had a second date.

She was actually really Chinese (ie - was from China) rather than just Chinese heritage obviously.
