I'm currently reading Jose Saramago's The Cave.

I really enjoy his work, but I have to admit that his artistic license with punctuation gets a bit frustrating at times.

Going through my semi-annual re-read of the major works of Tolkien. And still enjoying every word.

Isn't that just the best? Now you've got me craving some Silmarillion.

Right? I actually think the Ainulindale and Valaquenta are, collectively, the most beautiful creation myths I've ever seen. I never get tired of them. Or the Fall of the Noldor and the curse of the House of Feanor. Epic tragic myth at its best.

I'm currently forcing my way through Dune. I think this is my third attempt. I've simply carried on from the points where I left off. I'm about a quarter of the way in, and it's not as bad as I thought it would be. I enjoy Herbert's world-building, and I think I like where he's going in terms of conflict, etc., but, my god, he's such a horrific dialogist that it practically ruins the whole thing.

I should probably read that. I think I got a quarter of the way through an audiobook version, but I didn't continue for whatever reason. I'm sort of planning on reading it before I do my second reading of The Lord of the Rings.

Just finished Candide. I must be reliving high school. Interesting story, uses lots of overkill to make a point, however.

  10. You are almost through the worst of it. I recall almost bailing out at about that same point. Stick it out. The pace does pick up and, I think, the narrative becomes more readable.

Continuing the high school theme, I've moved on to The Last of the Mohicans. Don't know why, just felt like it.

    CinnamonGirl The Cheat is GROUNDED!

Back to Boy's Life, and starting to really get into it. In the meantime, I read:

When You Were Older (guy who works at the World Trade Center is late for work on 9-11, because he gets a call that his mother has died. He moves back home to a small town in Kansas to care for his mentally handicapped older brother, and falls in love with an Egyptian woman.)

When I Found You (man goes out hunting, his dog finds a baby abandoned in the woods; he wants to adopt the kid, but the kid's grandmother takes him in. 15 years later, she brings the kid back because she can't deal with his delinquency anymore.)

The Fort (three young best friends build a tree fort in the woods near their house. They see a young girl who has recently disappeared being led down a path at gunpoint, and report it to the police. The detective doesn't believe them, and they decide to save the girl themselves.)

Something fun, the Maximum Ride Series from James Patterson. Very enjoyable, easy read.

Anansi Boys by Neil Gaiman. American Gods was so good that I took a long break before starting this one.

I had started to read Strap Hanger by Taras Grescoe about mass transit and urban planning around the world which was fascinating. Except that by the time I got to the second chapter our own dysfunctional city council and hostile mayor blew our latest transit initiative (again) and suddenly I couldn't face reading any more. It's too demoralizing.

    Mind and Society, Lev Vygotsky.

I'm currently trolling around looking for something suitably trashy/historical/Regency to wallow in for a bit. Any suggestions are welcome. Otherwise I'm going to reread the Pink Carnation series by Lauren Willig.

Nineteen Eighty-Four. It's my second read. I don't think I was quite ready for it the first time.
