Worried that HBO's A Game of Thrones will go beyond A Clash of Kings this season, I've started on A Storm Of Swords.
I know that the Jaime Lannister character is going to get some decent screen time this season and it would be really hard to give him very much out of A Clash of Kings. Also, because I peruse some of the GoT threads and comments around the 'net I wanted to know why and who people were complaining about. Like, "Where are the Reeds?' (I guessed that they were a married couple--now I know better.) I was also getting confused about comments about both 'Ros' (a prostitute, not in the books) and Roose, who is. Comments like 'Arya was supposed to be Rooses's cup bearer, not Tywin Lannister's,' left me scratching my head.

All for the best as I'll get through the book series more briskly.

I'm reading "Inside Outside" by Herman Wouk that I've had for awhile. I got the "Game of Thrones" series for my birthday. I haven't started them yet. I also have some Clive Cussler books waiting too. I like to read the older stuff first.

Got 200 pages into the Mistborn book and gave up. I saw a lot of people like it (which is why I got it) but I just couldn't get past the characterization. (I know when you read fantasy the plot and events are going to be fantastical... but I still want to be able to believe in the characters as actual human beings)

    Gonna start on:

Kate Atkinson - Behind the Scenes at the Museum

I have only read "Case Histories" by her and really really like it, so hoping this will be similar.

If you mean Keliser, he's meant to seem fantastical, especially from Vin's point of view. You eventually start to see his flaws, as Vin does, but I guess you didn't get that far. Ah, well. To each his own. :)

At the moment, I'm rereading The Summerhouse by Jude Deveraux (some people have comfort food, I have comfort books.) After that, I'll be starting Artemis Fowl.

I read Wouk's The Caine Mutiny for a college history class on WW II We had to read a novel based on the war as part of the class reading list. Great book. They also made the book into a movie, but I haven't seen it.

It was a freaking awesome movie. One of Bogart's best performances, and that's really saying something.

I'm finally getting around to reading The Road, and seeing if this McCarthy fellow lives up to the hype. It's good, but depressing.

My longer commute gives me more time to read, but I do it less often so it balances out.

I've been rereading my way through the Shannara books by Terry Brooks chronologically. This isn't the recommended way to read them for a new reader, but I find it's interesting to revisit them in order. I'm up to The First King of Shannara now. I also like that Terry Brooks' website has his recommended reading order for new readers and another one for chronological re-readers. Anyone series with that many time gaps and prequels benefits from that.

    I'm a glutton for punishment, I think.

I have three books on the go: 1) a medieval epic poem, 2) a modernist epic novel, and 3) a modern epic fantasy trilogy.

It seems I've been reading these forever (maybe I have). I'm coming close to the end of two of them, and I think this will clear what has become a bit of a logjam.

I'm going to try focusing on reading one thing at a time. Not sure I can do that. :)

I just finished Heroics for Beginners, by John Moore. A coworker loaned me The Unhandsome Prince by the same author, which I'll be starting shortly.

Totally silly, fluffy books. But they're sword & sorcery fantasies that make fun of sword & sorcery fantasy, so I find them amusing.

Dante's Divine Comedy. I'm currently at the tail end of The Purgatorio (at The Earthly Paradise, Canto XXXI).

Fun! I have to say, I thought the Purgatorio was not bad-- I like the bit where he runs into Arnault Daniel (the only character in the Commedia Divina who gets to speak in a language other than Italian). But I found the Paradiso dull going. I thought the Inferno was far and away the best of the three parts.

If you're willing to pick up some Middle English (unless I am unfairly presuming that you have not already done so), I recommend Perl (my favorite medieval poem), Sir Gawan and the Grene Kny℥te, and Hous of Fam.
