I'm now reading the final Elric novelette I'll likely ever read: Doomed Lord's Passing. It's the final book of the Stormbringer sequence. Before that, I read the sequence Stealer of Souls. From what I've been reading about the Elric stuff, these are the best ones and cover the full span of Elric's adventures.

They're not bad. It's sword and sorcery as a kind of antithesis to Tolkienesque fantasy (i.e. the opposite of the idyllic good-trumps-evil wish fulfillment of Middle-earth). So you get a lot of angry moody doom. In the '60s, it was probably pretty invigorating, in the same way rock'n'roll was invigorating compared to classical music or the musical tastes of teenyboppers. In a post-grunge world, however, it comes across as too angsty and occasionally emo (where occasionally is too much). On top of that, the prose lumbers along a bit much in places.

I suppose it's worth reading to point out how silly most high/epic/heroic fantasy really is (like a good antithesis).

I think it's driving me to more fringe stuff along the lines of magic realism and "the fantastical." You know, modern/urban fantasy but without brooding werewolves and sparkly vampires.

I just finished "Dune" (which I have read before) and am about to start "Dune Messiah", which I haven't. The author is Frank Herbert (in case you didn't know).

Reading "The Hugo Winners" edited by Isaac Asimov. It's the winners from the 60's, and I'm enjoying it quite a bit.

Great Western Stories compiled by Bill Pronzini and Martin H. Greenberg. It includes stories by O. Henry, Max Brand, Mark Twain, Zane Grey, Jack London, and many others. Great stuff. I pretty sure it's out of print.

I'll be finishing up Titus Groan this weekend. (The Gormenghast trilogy is quite good. If you want a different kind of fantasy, give it a whirl. It is a kind of Dickensian gothic.)

Next, to commemorate the holiday season, I will be reading The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe followed closely by The Shining.
