After several disappointing thrift store runs, I finally found some books that interest me. I'm not yet sure which one I'll choose next.

Trust Your Heart by Judy Collins. I've been disappointed by several musician autobiographies, I hope that this one is different.

    The Religion by Tim Willocks.

The Native Moment by Andrew C. Ward. Per the front cover blurb, "A powerful story of modern Dublin [keeping in mind the 1959 copyright date!!]: bawdy and brilliant."

The Bone Garden by Tess Gerritsen. TG is one my favorite 'guilty pleasure' authors.

Tapadero The Making of a Cowboy by Willie Newbury Lewis. It's book number 11 The M.K. Brown Range Life Series. A young adult novel from 1972. Who knows?

The Red Tent by Anita Diamant. This was recommended by several TFPers.

Bluesman by Andre Dubus III. For the most part I enjoyed AD's House of Sand and Fog.

    Primal Fear by William Diehl.

  2. I would add myself to that list of TFP recommenders.

I am super excited for my flight this weekend. I will not have a toddler. I will not have a BabyDaddy. I am not in a class. It will just be me, and probably an annoying row mate, but I am going to read a book. Specifically, a book for leisure.

There are tons of books in my to be read pile...which one should I read?

Snow Falling on Cedars by David Guterson..I watched the movie more than 10 years ago, but would like to read the book.
The Book Thief by Markus Zusak... Saw this movie with DaddySquirrel's mom, but want to read the book.
Mennonite in a Little Black Dress by Rhoda Janzen... Found in a Little Library around town. The Japanese guest we had stay at our house a few months back got it, and I never returned it like I said I would. I might read it. It looks light.
I also have the Hunger Games Trilogy.

Any of the above. I much preferred the book SFOC over the movie version.

  4. I don't really remember what happens in the movie, as I don't think I was really watching it. I was hanging out in my friend's dorm room and talking the whole time.

It's been a while for me. I bought the DVD used, but was disappointed, only watched it once. I remember the movie focusing too much on the love affair (or was it unrequited love?).

Rebecca by Daphne DuMaurier... I look for character driven novels with complex plots, and a strong sense of place. I look for British authors first. Can't stand the manufactured commercial blather written today.

I also read As I Lay Dying, but though I agree with you it's no "classic", I did find it an enjoyable read even with some of the dumb stuff in it. What caught my eye on your post was your comment on Cormac McCarthy's writing. I have read eight of his novels and enjoyed every one.

I think that I'm two novels and four plays short of reading all of McCarty's published works; Child of God is the next novel I really want to read.

    ----------------------------------------

I about 2/3 through The Bone Garden by Tess Gerritsen, who one of my favorite guilty pleasure authors. Her novels are usually straightforward, no dictionary required, and you don't need to keep a list characters. TBG is different in that it switches back and forth between the present to the past, and the plot is more complicated.

If anybody follows the TV program Rizzoli and Isles you probably know that it's based on two characters from TG's novels.

I enjoyed Styron's Sophie's Choice. I need to look up a summary of DV.

I'm about a third of the way in. It's short but well written. It's also very insightful, and possibly of interest to both sufferers and non-sufferers of depression.

I'm about to start Bluesman by Andre Dubus III.

I liked his novel House of Sand and Fog, but actually liked the movie better, which is rare for me.

  16. Just finished The Second Coming by T J Sedgwick. OK alien contact tale. I'm still rather new to books on Kindle, and the number of typos could be distracting, if I let them.

Moving on to The Man in the High Castle, Philip K Dick. Want to read this before watching the series. Hoping the editing of the ebook is tighter than the first few I've read.

I read the book, haven't seen any of the series. The book is fairly short. The writers for the series, IMO, would need to take some major liberties to stretch it into a series. But Blade Runner was very loosely "based" on Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?, and it's a great movie.

Working my way through the series for the first time. Butcher really has me sucked in. Waiting for "Changes" (ebook) to be available at my library, but I am so impatient that I think I may just download from amazon.

I'm getting ready to order "The Life Changing Method of Tidying" to address my serious issues with clutter and organization.

Hubs bought "The Martian" for his kindle so I'm going to start that soon. As soon as I'm done with my current audio book, "Long Gone" (Alafair Burke), I'm should be up next for the newest Jack Reacher through OverDrive.

I have to balance all this study bullshit.
