    The clock ticking on my wall. And occasional swarms of birds making a rukus. Oh, there was a dog barking.
    Last night as I was trying to go to sleep our neighbor decided to start up some sort of loud power tool. It sounded a bit like a belt sander. I was ready to go knocking on doors to complain, but I couldn't isolate precisely which neighbor was inflicting the noise on us.

    My first apartment in DC was across the street from the National Zoo. In late winter and early spring, I would wake up to a screeching serenade every morning that I was told were the Macaques and Rhesus Monkeys in heat.
