Last night our local PBS station rebroadcast the Austin City Limits episode featuring John Prine.


My third time seeing it, and I love his music more each time.

One of the greatest songs ever written IMO. Even includes a rarely executed, at least in the music I generally listen to, minor to major key change, very subtle. (music theory geek with a tin ear but fortunately i can write a computer program to tell me what key a song is in since my brain can't). Although there seems to be some dispute over whether the song starts in D# major or C minor (they each contain the same notes, so it's entirely subjective) personally I hear C minor but most sources have it listed as D# major, but in any case, it only adds to the mystique of the song and everyone agrees it ends in E major! The mere fact that it starts off in an ambiguous key makes it musically interesting right off the bat and it only gets better from there!

Fun fact: "Total Eclipse of the Heart" is the only song I'm aware of that has a key change from the minor into the equivalent major, so if it sounds like it has a key change, but not really, that's why, it's the same set of notes played in a different mode! (F minor to G# major) (All of you piano, trumpet, clarinet, etc players will have to forgive me for my all-sharp notation, I used to play trumpet so I know how it is dealing with lots of flats rather than sharps, but there is no E A D G or B flat on a guitar, therefore everything is a sharp

Hahaha funny me, concerts, well I hope they reschedule it someday cause I still have the ticket in a box.....
