I like this cover of a John Sebastian (Lovin' Spoonful) tune

For some reason this tune was rattling around in my bean this morning. Odd, I don't particularly care for it, either...

 

Pete Seeger died peacefully in his sleep last night at the age of 94.

In 1955, he wrote this classic:



In 1956, the House of Representatives voted 373 to 9 to cite Pete Seeger and seven others (including playwright Arthur Miller) for contempt of Congress, as they failed to cooperate with House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC) in their attempts to investigate alleged subversives and communists.

Repeatedly pressed by the committee to reveal whether he had sung for Communists, Seeger responded sharply," I love my country very dearly, and I greatly resent this implication that some of the places that I have sung and some of the people I have known, and some of my opinions, whether they are religious or philosophical , or I might be a vegetarian, make me any less an American." He was blacklisted and kept off commercial television for more than a decade.

 

RIP Pete... the music lovers around the world mourn today.

This was written by Bonnie Bramlett and Leon Russell; later, the Carpenters made it a hit.

 

My favorite version was Rita Coolidge from the Mad Dogs and Englishmen tour. Great rendition that the Carpenters totally copied.
