Waking Up

Weekdays I'm woken up first by my wife's alarm clock around 5:45 or 6 a.m. This is usually followed by my 6 y/o daughter waking up and using the bathroom (old house with loud doors). My alarm goes off at 6:30 and I'm off to awaken my 8 and 3 y/o sons and help get the 3 y/o dressed.

I work until midnight and by the time I get home, check my email, take care of the dog and get ready for bed. It is usually 1 a.m. It takes me about 15 min to fall asleep so I average about 5 hours of sleep each night. Since I'm someone who could really use a full 8 hours every night, I usually drag throughout the day.

On the weekends, I usually get woken up no later than 7 a.m. to the sound of the kids playing. If I'm lucky and they are quiet, I can usually go until 7:30.

I don't ever get to just sleep until my body wakes up. If that ever happens again, I'll return to this post and provide an update. However, based on the age of my kids, this thread will most likely be a part of the archive under another new TFP when that happens.

Half the time I get up around 8, the other half around 9:30. But on those rare occasions that I am left to my own devices, my body always defaults to going to bed around 2:30AM, getting up around 1:00PM. I can work on 7 or 8 hours of sleep; 9-10 is better; 11 or 12 is best.

Like levite I'm a hard night owl that needs about 9 hours or more of sleep. Except for when I've stayed up a whole day beforehand I haven't gone to sleep before about 3-4am. On top of that I tend to slowly rotate around the clock because after waking up I want to be up for a longer period than exists in the day. So my sleep debt racks up throughout the week until I inevitably need to stay up 24hrs and crash early to reset myself, or I just wind up crashing and sleeping ~20 hours through every alarm clock whether I want to or not.

The amusing thing is that unless I tell people they have no idea just how much I have to fight with this just to be functional on a daily basis... I need about 4 days lead-up to do pretty much anything before ~3 in the afternoon that requires me to be remotely capable of thinking.

For now though I describe myself as a "functional insomniac" in the same way some people say "functional alcoholic" and terrify my friends with the thought of what I would be able to accomplish if I ever worked this out.

I'm up at 6:40 weekdays, despite my semi-retirement and lack of need to get out of bed. Saturdays by about 7:30, and on Sunday I sleep until 9:00. I don't go to be until after midnight, usually 12:30 - 1:30, so I'm not getting a lot of sleep, but find as I get older, I need less. Plus, I am a world-class "recreational" napper (as opposed to compensatory napping). I can sleep anywhere, any time through the day. My wife will complain, but I just tell her she knew I was tired when she married me.

The answers here are a testament to the massive sleep deficit that North Americans are carrying. No wonder our personal lives are so delicate when we're short 1-2 hours of sleep a night on a regular basis.

5:45am - 6am my body tells me it's time to get out of bed and release the contents of my bladder. That's my usual time to wake up on weekdays, so I'm a-ok with it. On weekends, I just go back to sleep after dealing with my body's business. I'm glad I can fall back asleep pretty easily.

Waking up this morning sucked.. In bed at 1230, asleep around 1, awake at 230 for a bathroom trip, awake at 540 to study for an exam this morning. I am running on about 5-6 hours a night for the last few nights in a row, so I could really use a nap.

fflowley Don't just do something, stand there!

Somehow when I passed age 40 I became a farmer.
I can't sleep past about 0630 any more.
And on the other end by 9:30 pm I am nodding off.
It sucks when you are sure you will never grow up to be like your parents..........and then you grow up and turn into your old man.
The only good part about it is you realize your parents weren't really as lame as you thought.
