Pig, could you pls describe more on "very functional"? I long for couple of dogs with personality, role and life of their own.

PS: We live in rural on a small farm. Got just chicken and goats. May grow plants and few more animals next year.

no problem curious. essentially, they eat the same amount of food as the dog i wanted. cross breed between a vizla and weimaramer. i got three chihuahua mexican rat dogs, all cross bred (but from what i suspect to be the same litter, with multiple sires).

think cerberus, but separated. if all three mark on the same location, i know something is in that direction. so it's a back-up system to my alarm system, and they are getting better at reduced false alarms as they get older.

they are also the best kitchen vacuums ever, and they pretty much eat anything. i'm certain they could survive on cigarette butts, push come to shove.

it doesn't hurt that they're sweet, well socialized, and get along with other animals well.

i won't lie, i would never have chosen these animals, but now they are family and they serve their function well. i don't need them to be attack dogs - i keep enough weapons around that i can handle that part.

companionship and alarm system, small dietary needs and the ability to eat anything, plus none of the problems that come with most pure-breds.

I kind of thought she was a little young, but then again maybe y'all are secretly part of The Travellers :D

Seriously, given my years-long hiatus from tfp, I thought for a second that maybe more time had passed in real-life-space than I'd realized.

Congrats to daughter #2. May they have many years of happiness :D

I looked up to 'cerberus' very interesting.
I have chickens and goats. Mostly will add more animals in near future. So this is a requirement.
Five years ago we gave up our two dogs due to our international relocation. Ever since we are very very cautious about getting dogs. We feel guilty that we gave them up. One of them is a farm dog by birth. We gave him to a farm and he is doing pretty well. The other one is a family type. Very sweet. Unfortunately he went to a family not that caring. So next time we get a dog it has to stay with us no matter where we go. Except for short-time intermediate stay.
Thanks for your detailed response. This looks ideal to me! The last time we had our dogs, I use to cook separate food for them each day. In my today's routine that would be tough. Thanks again!

btw my dogs were from same litter too! I found them in gutter. I petted the mother and she wanted me to take a pup. People were so scared that she would attack me. They added so much life to our life. The mother found our home and visited her pups a few times...

funny you should mention the ditch bit. The PigSty is located such that it's a convenient location to throw things away.

I was driving home a few years ago, and saw something wriggling in the ditch on the side of the road.

3 puppies. Woo hoo! looked like a shepherd, a golden and a beagle. i thought "pig can run with the shepherd and the golden, and beagle can stay at home like chevy chase's dog in that movie....."

yup. until their little legs turned into velociraptor sized appendages, and well....i've got mixed breed chihuahuas.

i've probably taken 4 or 5 animals to rescue no-kill organizations, and have adopted another 4 or 5 as yard animals. pets are useful things to have when you live in the country.

That is how I came to acquire my cats. I used to have a coworker who lived in the country. One day, she was out walking on her property when she heard some kittens mewling. She found three of them in a sack with their whiskers burnt off. One required serious attention from the vet, but the other two were fine, and she offered them up for adoption at work. My parents were looking for some feline companionship at the time, so I took the two kittens up to my parents. My mom promptly named them Ruff and Tumble.

A couple years later, they came back to live with us after Ruff almost got eaten by a bald eagle. I couldn't ask for better cats. They're generally well-behaved, don't cause a lot of trouble, aren't picky eaters, and are pretty cuddly. Right now, Ruff is sleeping on top of the printer on my desk, and Tumble is dozing on the back of a chair a couple feet away. Both like to be close to us if possible.

so this has been on fb, but me and a ladyfriend totally rode into williams-brice behind the carolina football team when the Real USC beat Clemson in the Palmetto Bowl...

And yes, I got yelled at for not being a "real emergency vehicle." Like, how do they know what I've got in my strong box?
