this is starting too look similar to the gabriel giffords shooting. total media overeaction blaming pro gun and right wing groups before all the facts were in.

I find it incredibly hard to believe a young black male in a hooded sweatshirt would ever be involved in a violent crime.

I also find it incredibly hard to believe that a citizen with a concealed handgun permit could engage in a lawful self-defense shoot.

It's 2012, for Chrissakes. We're so beyond crime and guns.

 

Zimmerman will get his day in court, as he should.

The sad fact remains that if he had stayed in his car as the police suggested instead of "going viligante" and attempting to take the law into his own hands (and then conveniently falling back on a SYG defense after confronting the kid), Martin would be alive and Zimmerman would not be on trial for murder.

For me, the one positive to come out of this is that it may (should) result in taking a second look at how ambiguous this law is as well as how a person who has assaulted a police officer and former girl friend in the past can get a CCW permit.

 

First of all, let's stop trying to play the whole "the media hates us" narrative. Sure, gun control advocates seized on the case to make a point. But let's not pretend that the sudden rush to defend Zimmerman would have been the same had he stabbed Martin to death, as opposed to shooting him. This whole "their side are playing politics (that dirty word), while my side is just using common sense" approach is nonsense and leads nowhere.

As for the picture of Zimmerman's head bleeding, my view of this subject is unchanged. "So what?" It seems to me that whether they actually fought or not is beside the point. The point is that Martin was committing no crime and is dead. Whether Zimmerman is legally culpable is for the courts to decide, but it seems to me that is should be common sense that Martin should not be dead and that Zimmerman may very well end up having done things within the law, but that it is his moral responsibility for the death. And I also think that, whatever happened, the issue was that the police messed up at the time of the shooting, and that they were certainly negligent, at the least. The fact that Martin went unidentified overnight even though he had a cell phone with him is proof enough.

Finally, apparently SYG is to law as light is to physics (both wave and a particle). After all, SYG laws are, simultaneously, the exact same thing as you find elsewhere in the country and the only thing that allows you to defend your daughters from being raped and killed by the zombie of Ted Bundy.

 

I think the "Media hates us" angle is particularly relevant given the misleading news they have been reporting. See below.

Frankly, what I found personally more offensive was the criticism of Fox News, many right wing talking heads and bloggers, and the NRA claiming that the "main stream media" was making this a "black thing" and an anti-gun" thing.

It was a black unarmed kid that was shot by a guy claiming a SYG defense and that should not be ignored, as much as Fox and NRA would like to focus to be elsewhere.

 

And then there was Geraldo's "hoodie" thing, John Derbyshire's "avoid blacks" thing, Sean Hannity's off the record talks with Zimmerman, the spread of fake Martin photos and so on. And while unfair to Zimmerman, I don't see how the editing of the 911 tape is at all an attack on gun owners or gun advocates.

I'm pickin' up what you're putting down, my full-bearded brother. All sorts of evil voodoo has been released in a purple cloud to roost in the nooks and crannies of our tiny minds. We've got African-Americans playing the race card more, we've got paranoid obese white guys playing the need-mah-guns card more and the fumble-fuck cops playing the we-can't-do-anything-right card. The media is playing ALL the cards. Pretty much every group is going full retard based solely on rumors and conjecture. At the end of the day, it's no steps forward and five steps back to the ideals of the 1900s.

The NRA Concealed Carry Hoodies are evidently a hot item..for that "extra tactical edge."

 

Oh, c'mon... I fail to see how this is relevant given the facts. The shooter wasn't wearing a hoodie and the victim wasn't armed. This isn't even all that funny, just shitty gun garb. Now, if it was a graphic-adorned Dyneema-armored hoodie designed to stop 9x19mm +P JHP rounds... that'd be funny.

 

You might be surprised by the numbers of people you see in your regular daily activities who have concealed firearms. Most people choose to conceal their weapons and do it in a manner that is both comfortable and in a manner that doesn't draw attention. Get a clue.

What is sad about this tragedy from a national point of view, is the politicization of, excessive crime creating fear, the death of a young man based on profiling, and initially corrupt/incompetent police work.
