Certainly in England, the existence of the snotty email would itself be actionable. By which I mean that you could take this to an industrial tribunal and win punitive damages for the person trying to damage your professional reputation.

The fact that they are a board member actually makes your case stronger not weaker, as they have responsibilities and duty of care to you as soon as the job offer was made (you don't even need to be in post, there is a contract once the offer is accepted).

In England, I would advocate contacting an employment lawyer, but in USA, I am not familiar with the system.

    Good luck.

she'd have a good case pro bono if she was a black, woman, over 40, otherwise known as a triple dip for protected classes. she has a good case as it is, but she'd have to find a lawyer willing to take it and of course either pro bono or retainer paid.

That is a seriously toxic work environment. I hope it does not wear on you. Sounds to me like some faction of the board is using you. They are making your "enemy" look bad with her vitrol , dig her own grave and get booted.

Reading all of this makes me really grateful that I am able to work for myself. I only take an outside job if it can lead me to knowledge and perspective. I've been working part time for a collection agency, and I'm learning a lot. But I can see that I'm already straying from the topic, so will stop here.

    More drama.
Ive been in the office the last couple of days getting up to snuff on software, etc. After careful thought, I approached the pres of the board (who hired me) and told him that after the board voted me in, and the VP wrote that nasty letter, that I felt too uncomfortable to continue. I told him I would stay until he hired someone else, however long that may be. He was not happy, but accepted it.

Later, the pres came down and announced that he had left a message for the VP stating that he was removing himself from his seat and the VP could take over beginning immediately (including hiring) or, if he was unwilling to step up at this time to take over that he would need to resign the collective altogether, not even attending meetings, and the pres would remain seated and hire whoever he feels will be best for the org (although not necessarily me as I have given notice).

Maaaannnnn. I feel terrible for everyone.

Now image that happened months from now as you were happy go lucky thinking things were just great, but meanwhile that crap was going on without your knowledge.

Don't feel bad. It would have happened without you there eventually. You just happened to be the right motivator for him to move on himself.

But here's a great polish saying that I've been using for the past year, in Poland, there's an idiom, "Nie mój cyrk, nie moje małpy" . . . literally, "not my circus, not my monkey;" figuratively, "not my problem."

    Hey! Start a thread?!

Zen asked: I'd love to know what, on that morning, triggered you to cancel the interview.

Yes. So. Did I ever tell you that my ex once said to me, "Living with you is sometimes like I Love Lucy"? The cancelled interview had nothing to do with thoughtful consideration or an intentional change of mind. Instead, I woke that morning with hair that was looking a little green and as I showered I added a little red tone to counteract that and spruce up for the interview. The woman exiting the shower however was not me but a 90s magenta haired rocker chick that would be looked at twice, but not in a corp environ! Onward and up. and all that. (Lets never speak of this again.)

I appreciate your listening and responses. Thank you.
Lets put this baby to bed now - not my circus, not my monkey. (I really like that postcard image!)

Thanks for telling me of the hair event. I was worried you might have had second thoughts about going.

@Cynthetic mentioned 'not my circus, not my monkey' = not my problem.

I concoct a scenario: might you have originally been brought into job number one as a bit part player in others' boardroom drama. Like when, in some movies movies, a character is brought in ONLY to be the 'big reason' to drive the plot. Wasn't that VP one who'd been attacking you previously? The boss knew that when she hired you so, imo, you were brought in as the 'red rag' to enage the 'bull'.

If this is accurate, I don't think you have any moral obligation to give them 'stay until he hired someone else, however long that may be.' I understand your good will, and probably wish to not mess people about, but I believe your present position is the result of their messing about.

Again echoing Cynthetics words ... it's not your problem.

The things that go on in business...you can't write this shit.

In the end, you just have to do the best for yourself, keep your head on straight...because the rest of the world is bat-shit crazy, especially mgmt.
