Narrow win gives victor Palmer a sinking feeling

It was hardly a Titanic win.
Mining giant Clive Palmer narrowly won the seat of Fairfax on Saturday by just 36 votes, in a knife-edge result that will head for a recount on Monday.
Mr Palmer responded to the announcement by calling for an overhaul of Australia's voting processes, and called the country's independent voting body ''a national disgrace''.
"The ballots have no security and the AEC is a national disgrace that needs to be heavily scrutinised,'' Mr Palmer said. "A full review of Australia's voting system is required - our right to a transparent democracy demands it.''
The Australian Electoral Commission finished its count at 2.30pm, announcing Mr Palmer had won the seat by three dozen votes, after clawing back from an earlier margin of only 22 votes.
If the margin of votes at the completion of the distribution of preferences is fewer than 100, a recount is automatically triggered. The Australian Electoral Commission will waste no time, beginning its recount on Monday

Police confirm body found north of Brisbane was hacked and set alight but have no name and no leads
HACKED, dumped and set alight. Police still have no leads on the discovery of a man's body north of Brisbane late last week.A police spokesman said officers were yet to identify the man whose headless torso was found on fire at Cedar Pocket on Thursday night. The site was scoured yesterday but the search failed to reveal a weapon or further human remains.Central Regional Crime Co-ordinator Detective Acting Superintendent Darrin Shadlow confirmed the man's body was missing a number of body parts, including his head."I can now confirm the head was removed from the body," he said.

Police hunt gang behind highway acid attack on motorbike rider

Police are appealing for help to find four people involved in an acid attack on a motorbike rider in Victoria.
The 62-year-old man was riding along the South Gippsland Highway to Melbourne yesterday when he was flagged down, pushed down an embankment, and had acid thrown in his face.
He suffered serious burns to his face and body.
His attackers shouted that they "Didn't like bikies," but police say the victim is not associated with any outlaw motorcycle groups.
Detective Acting Sergeant Peter Johnston says he thinks it was a random attack and says police are scouring CCTV for the attackers' car, a small, dark green four-door sedan.

Ancient Fish With Strong Jawline Could Rewrite History Of Faces

As faces go, Entelognathus primordialis isn't much to look at, even for a fish. But consider that the 419 million-year-old, armor-plated fish is the earliest known creature to have what humans might recognize as a face, according to research published Wednesday in Nature. That's mostly due to its bony, modern jaw.

As USA Today reports:"The first Entelognathus fossil was unearthed in China in 2010, but it was not until scientists had chipped away at the specimen in the lab that they realized they were onto something very weird. Their new fish looked like a placoderm, an ancient swimmer girded in homegrown armor made of bony plates. The fish, described in this week's issue of Nature, had small, almost immobile eyes and a flat forehead. And then there was its lower face: a jigsaw puzzle of interlocking bones a lot like humans. It's a homely ancient fish with a supermodel's bone structure."

Survivors from a boat that sank off the south of Java said they had raised the alarm with Australian authorities, passing on their exact location at least 24 hours before their boat sank with the loss of an estimated 59 lives.
But immigration minister Scott Morrison contradicted the reports, saying initial reports suggested the boat had foundered in Indonesian waters, and Australian authorities were phoned on Friday morning, not Thursday morning as reported by survivors.

Gillard shares candid moments as PM | Sky News Australia

As Australia's prime minister she spent hours delivering meticulously crafted statements and articulate messages. But even holding the highest role in public office does not save you from the odd instance of foot in mouth. For Julia Gillard, the instance occurred during her first encounter with US President Barack Obama.'He said to me you know I really envy ... your question time',' she recalled during a public interview with Anne Summers on Monday night.'To which I said, instantaneously, are you mad?'.'And then the second it was out of my mouth I thought that was kind of a really dumb thing to say to the leader of the free world.'Fortunately he laughed.'
It was one of many anecdotes the former prime minister shared with a 2600-strong audience at Sydney Opera House during a candid interview with Dr Summers. In her first public appearance since Kevin Rudd seized the prime ministership in June, Ms Gillard was greeted with a thunderous applause from a overwhelming female audience.
Ms Gillard revealed some of the closed door moments in politics, including the glass of wine she snuck in before visiting the Governor-General on June 26 to formally recommend Mr Rudd be installed as prime minister after she lost the leadership ballot. She also revealed the in-house joke that maybe the first dog Ruben would fill the chair.'And there may have been some suggestions over that glass of wine that Ruben, and as people probably know there is someone who tweets Ruben for PM, that we could make it the most important Twitter account on the planet,' she said.
