Two people are dead and three police officers have been injured during a hostage drama and gunbattle in the Melbourne suburb of Brighton.

A volley of about 20 shots was heard about 6pm after a woman was taken hostage by a man about 4.30pm.

When police arrived at the scene they discovered the body of a man in the foyer of the apartments, according to multiple reports.

An explosion was reported to police about 4.30pm.

Channel Seven reported that an unnamed man rang the station today with a distressed woman in the background.

The caller allegedly said: “This is for IS, this is for al-Qa’ida.’’

There has been no official confirmation that the call was authentic.

The Supreme Court says the Principality of Hutt River has to pay tax after all

The Supreme Court in Western Australia has ruled that the Principality of Hutt River, Australia’s oldest micronation, must pay tax — about $3 million to start with.

Justice Le Miere today ordered that Prince Leonard, who formed the breakaway state in 1970, pay the Australian Tax Office (ATO) $2.77 million for tax owed in the seven years to 2013. Another $242,669.53 must be paid by his son, Arthur Wayne Casley.

The princes of Hutt River had argued that the court did not have jurisdiction because the principality is an independent sovereign state.

They are laying charges against cardinal pell. He'll never come back to Australia to face them, but i never thought they'd lay charges.
I don't think Australia has an extradition treaty with the Vatican.

Lord Mayor Lisa Scaffidi and WA Police Commissioner Karl O’Callaghan rubbished Perth’s inclusion yesterday, saying it was not based on fact.

The Sun claims WA suffers from “widespread crystal meth use”. It describes Perth’s meth scourge as a “dark secret” lurking far from the country’s famous tourist hotspots.

“Perth is the capital of Western Australia, the State with the worst crystal meth problem in the country,” the article says. “Crystal meth abuse Down Under has turned rural areas in Western Australia into what have been dubbed ‘Ice Towns’.

“Perth sees its hospitals filled with addicts who commit crimes to fund their habit.”

The article rates Perth alongside 10 other cities including Raqqa in Syria — which has been under the occupation of Islamic State since 2013.

It also includes Kiev in Ukraine where war has erupted, Mogadishu in Somalia which has been torn apart by decades of war and al-Qaida backed militant attacks, and San Pedro Sula in Honduras, where the murder rate is 173.6 per 100,000 people — the highest in the world.

US police officers have shot dead an Australian woman who reportedly called 911 after hearing a noise near her home in Minneapolis.

Minnesota’s public safety department said a woman was shot in Minneapolis after two officers responded to a callout about a possible assault on Saturday at 11.30pm local time. The police officers did not have their body cameras turned on.

The woman has been named as Justine Damond, who ran meditation workshops at the Lake Harriet Spiritual Community.

Her stepson, Zac Damond, said she had called police after hearing a noise near her house.

Police tapes show that at 11:39, the officers told dispatchers the situation was under control. Just two minutes later, at the 11:41pm, they said one person had been shot and called for emergency medical assistance.

Ms Damond, 40, a spiritual healer and life coach who was due to be married next month, was shot by Officer Mohamed Noor.
He has declined to be interviewed by investigators and has not responded to media interview requests.

In the United States, you cannot be compelled to answer questions. There are circumstances under which you must show ID, but you always have the right to remain silent. Doesn't mean you won't be arrested. He's better off to keep his mouth shut, otherwise he'll incriminate himself.

According to what I read, the cop was "startled" when she came up to the squad car and yelled for help. He should have had better situational awareness, and frankly, how the petite blonde in her pajamas could be considered a threat to life and limb is beyond me...

Obviously the cop wanted to shoot the white woman because he was Muslim, that makes perfect sense right?
