The US city of Portland in Oregon is ditching more than 140 million litres of drinking water after a teenager was caught on camera urinating into a reservoir.The water - enough to fill nearly 60 Olympic-size swimming pools - will be discarded despite tests finding no evidence of contamination.

I forget when Craig signed his current four year (?) deal with CBS, 2013 probably, but he used to always say that he wouldn't sign another contract to do the LLS. But he did. And now he's getting out of the contract. Hmmmm.

A British earl is putting a mountain, and a title, up for sale in a bid to pay off part of his hefty inheritance tax bill.
Hugh Lowther, the Earl of Lonsdale, has put Blencathra, a 868-metre-high peak in north-west England's Lake District, on the market for 1.75 million pounds ($3.17 million).AUS

They were talking about "America's Report Card" on NPR. Only 40% of 12th graders read "at or above" grade level and 69% of 12th graders failed the math test. John Stewart always jokes about "our future Chinese Overlords"; Maybe we should all start learning Mandarin?

I think you're pretty much right... A quick Google search shows our pathetic place on the ranks of education around the world. You know how small India is compared to the entire U.S.? It's only roughly a third of the size of the entire U.S. - but as of way back in 2009 they had more honor students than America has students, period (a Google search finds several videos claiming this, dating back to the end of the MySpace era). I wonder where it stands now? America needs to get its ass in gear and stop handing consolation prizes - kids' artificially-inflated self esteem is not going to slow its fall from grace.

Well, yeah, in geographical area. But India has far more people.

It's like saying New York City (305 square miles) is tiny compared to Wyoming (almost 98,000 square miles).

But NYC has more than 14 times as many people as Wyoming.

Britain's high court has ordered that King Richard III should be buried in a cathedral in Leicester, the city where his remains were found under a car park two years ago.
Descendants of the infamous ruler, who died in battle in 1485, had fought for his remains to be buried in York Minster, in the northern city that gave its name to Richard's royal house.
But the court ruled that there was no reason that Richard, who was immortalised as one of Shakespeare's greatest villains, should not be buried in Leicester, eastern England.

A Chinese replica of the iconic Sphinx will be dismantled after an Egyptian ministry complained about the structure.The massive copy of the ancient statue has been erected in the northern province of Hebei.
However, Egypt's ministry of antiquities has complained to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) about the imitation, the official Xinhua news agency reported on Sunday.
The agency is quoting an official with a cultural park on the outskirts of the provincial capital Shijiazhuang as saying the imitation would serve only as a temporary scene for shooting movies and television dramas."We are very respectful to world cultural heritage and express our apologies for any misunderstanding," added the official, who declined to be named. With traumatic injuries, timing in treatment can be the difference between life and death. What if surgeons could hit the pause button, giving them precious additional time to treat the wounds? Suspended animation has been featured in a wide array of fictional films, but could it actually work on humans? The FDA has approved a small study that will allow surgeons at UPMC Presbyterian Hospital in Pittsburgh to try to suspend human life later this month.
In Hollywood, suspended animation involves freezing solid (or nearly so), thawing at some point in the future when new medical advances have taken place to treat their conditions. This emergency preservation and resuscitation (EPR) technique isn’t quite so extreme, but it will reduce body temperature to 10 degrees Celsius (50 degrees Fahrenheit) by inserting a cannula into the aorta and flushing cold saline into the system. This will slow the blood flow, which will prevent the body from bleeding out (which can be fatal within minutes). The low temperatures will also slow other biological processes as well.
This state of hypothermia can only be sustained by the human body for about two hours. While this isn’t as dramatic of EPR as some may have expected, that could easily provide enough time for surgeons to perform emergency lifesaving surgery

What an idiot.

I've been annoyed by cyclists before. Typically by ones that I've almost taken out because they ran red lights without so much as slowing down. I'm fine with sharing the road with them, I just prefer they meet us drivers halfway by also obeying the rules of the road.

That said, I see nothing in those video clips that the cyclists did wrong. Bright light at night to be visible, bright colors during the day, they seemed to edge over as far as was reasonable to make it easier to pass, etc. The guy just makes himself look ignorant and malicious IMO.
