When I lived in Jerusalem, there was a falafel place right near me that made the best hummus in the city. They used to make (on request only) a ridiculously delicious sandwich wherein they would stuff three or four big kubbeh into a thick, warm pita liberally smeared with the hummus of the angels, toss in a little roasted onion, a dab of Israeli cucumber salad, some pickles, a couple slices of pickled turnip, and a little bit of sesame cream (thicker than tehina, but not solid like halvah, and flavored slightly with both pepper and honey).

It was indescribably luscious, and came with either freshly made lemonade or limonana (fresh lemonade infused with fresh mint).

Reading this thread reminded me of it....

That description really brings Jerusalem to life for me. Thanks. :)

Yes you did, but we are re-purposing it.

I voted for Peanut Butter and Jam. I understand it is a simple sandwich but, when made properly, on fresh bread, it is a thing of wonder. Sublime.

I eat one at least once a week. There have been times where these sandwiches were my only source of protein.

I do, however, really like all sort of other sandwiches. Sandwiches are probably one of my favourite things to eat. Lately, I've been on an egg salad sandwich kick. If anyone has a recipe for a great egg salad mix, please share.

Turkish Bread, Salami, Spicy Chutney and Cheese (maybe Jarlsburg, though this is a subject in its own right) - toasted. Yum! There was (maybe is...) a sandwich shop near my old work that made these - to die for...

This poll doesn't make sense - you can put sooooo many things in a sandwich - who in their right mind is going to vote for a single ingredient?

I so agree with you on this.

Actually, I was just remembering a sandwich shop that made the best peanut butter and banana sandwiches. I can't explain why they were better than others I've had. They just were. Sometimes it's best to just enjoy.

A drizzle of maple syrup or honey makes that sandwich even more epic.

As for egg salad, I haven't made my own in a while, but that is because the cook at school makes an AMAZING egg salad. The secret is dill.

Snowy, can you see if you can get me the recipe? I am trying all sorts of versions and I can't find the one that's in my head.

I'll try. I don't see our cook very often anymore. It might have to wait until our next inservice, which isn't until March.

    No worries. Thanks regardless.

  13. One more "other" vote. Almost anything edible can be made into a delicious sandwich. I define "sandwich" rather liberally. Tacos, pita wraps, hoagies, grinders... they all qualify along with (insert favorite ingredient here) stuffed/stacked between slabs of bread.

Peanut butter has almost universal application with both sweet and savory accompaniments. Bacon? Sure! Honey? Bring it! Peanut butter, bacon and syrup between two pancakes = breakfast sandwich of heroes!

Mmmm.... peanut butter and ____ sammiches. My brother did PB, honey and mayo sammiches, which totally weirded me out.
I love natural PB and strawberries on a rice cake.
I totally dig Angie's Subs and I learned how to recreate the C&H Special.... white bread hoagie, toasted with ham and provolone, topped with an amazing chicken salad and pickles. Holy jeebus, it's to die for.
I also love turkey and a little bit of mayo on blue cheese-walnut bread.
And a kick ass Let's Nosh wrap from Let's Nosh which is turkey, roast beef, corned beef, swiss cheese and slaw, when I'm feeling decadent. Or a nova bagel.
Man, I love me some sandwiches.

I like you for being a meatlover.

EDIT: And female. Any female meatlover, in this day and age of salad-munching teens and housewives, deserves kudos.

Brats split, fried, with kraut and mustard. really good.

I've developed my own way to eat liverwurst: Spread on toast with some hot mustard (Keens or a dijon) slice some manzanilla olives and sprinkle on top. Eat open face, or with another piece of toast (make sure it's still warm). I know - it sounds weird, but man it's tastey.

I will have to remember to toast my bread before putting liverwurst on it!
