Nope, and quite honestly it did little to help me in this over all. Just having a good biological background is helpful as you can get a feel for what sounds like BS faster. There was a point in life I could write out the entire krebs cycle from memory, including all the side paths. This is no longer that point in my life, I'd have to google just to remember the start.

Most personal trainers are awful. The funny thing in my gym is that I see them work their clients, doing silly complicated exercise, but then when I watch THEM work out by themselves they are doing the usual ones. Not a bosu ball in sight. The other issue for personal trainers is apparently they are not allowed to give nutritional advice. They can't set up a diet plan or they get in trouble legally. Its funny because any idiot can sell a book full of bullshit on the subject but a PT needs to send you to a "nutritionist".

http://thechive.files.wordpress.com/2014/04/hq-dar-181.jpg <-shes allowed to give nutrition advice.

But it also speaks of the lack of real effort a lot of PT's put into their craft. If I were to be a PT the first thing I'd get would be the nutritionist (no idea if thats really a title) degree.

My favorite PT quote from my gym walking by a trainer was "I don't consider it a useful work out unless its 12-20 reps". My reaction...

    Get on my level.

I'm heavier, which is good for me considering that I've been badly underweight for most of my adult life. Now it's just a matter of getting a bit more fit and a bit less fat.

I went for a good long walk earlier, because I overworked my calves on the jump rope and my legs are too sore for it today. I'm not happy with how much I've done today. Might go run up and down the stairs a few times before bed.

Your body can be running on a calorie deficit and not be in starvation mode. True starvation mode is actually pretty scary.

And also overblown in dieting. It takes about three days of no food to reach it. By overblown I mean people will start talking about "starvation mode" when you are still eating 1500 calories a day.

If your body is consuming itself though, you are "starving", sooner or later you run out of stuff to break down and you die. When I cut I do about a -1000k/cal deficit. If at this point I were to do that for a year, I would be either dead or on my death bed.

Starting Bill Starr 5x5 today. Initially lifting less weight. I'm hoping this will give my old body some 'rest' while I ramp up the overall volume. Won't be lifting near my current 5x5 max on any lifts for 6 weeks. 3 full-body workouts a week, versus about 2 or 3 days of half-body workouts a week. Actual volume is only slightly higher per workout. In the end, I need the break from heavy.

I recently switched to a 5*5 myself, 3 days a week. I'm trying to figure out how to do deads though. Deads are just body killers in terms of endurance. When I was new at this I wasn't exactly deadlifting a lot so it wasn't so bad, but even doing multiple sets of 275 can get to you, and thats light. Either I do them last which just sucks, OR I do them early on and the rest of my lifts will suffer a bit. I think I might just do one deadlifting day a week.

I have a big naked trip coming up in a week, after that I'm going to bulk again and as such it should be easier. I've been either cutting or maintaining and that just doesn't leave a lot in the tank at the end of a workout. The sacrifices I make to look good naked :D

I'm still cutting while I do this cycle of 5x5. Not too badly, but it might become an issue towards the end.

Deads are man-makers. They make very tired men... I haven't done deads in a couple of years, other than some stiff legged deads, so this is going to be a trial. Fortunately it's only once a week. I think the stronglifts 5x5 has you doing deads every day, right? Or was that madcow?

I'm pretty sure they are every workout but only a 1*5. Still if I max out on deads, ugh. I gotta do them, I used to be religious in it now I've been slacking.

This plan is deads one day a week and actually 4x5 ramping up the weights, which will be relatively light. A few years ago I did a 5x5 that all the work sets were the same heavy weight, done for five sets of five. Squats, bench, and deads three days a week. That was tough, but I got mighty strong doing it.

I'm feeling a bit too old for that right now.

Got some pants at Costco a couple of weeks ago, and they were a little tight when I put them on at home, but today they fit just fine. I'm pretty happy about that!

My big fitness goal this summer is to get my posture taken care of.

I'm toying with the idea of taking another crack at learning to swim. Magpie and her friend are excited about swimming this summer. I never was very good at it. I can keep my head above water and get myself from point a to point b but I don't kid myself that I'm a very strong swimmer. I just never took to it.

So, yeah, I've been off of martial arts for about two months because I've been so busy. The week I get back: Hey, Dan, you're still gonna be grading for Muay Thai this Saturday. Don't worry—you'll do all right.

At least I get two classes this week to review.

Level 2/Orange, here I come? *crosses fingers*

With minimal practice, it becomes second nature. It's just a matter of figuring out the physics.

Adult lessons are really helpful. I swam a lot as a kiddo but didn't swim much again until my twenties, and taking an adult swim class made a huge difference.
