If I can reduce the stove watching time I'm less likely to either scorch it or have a messy boil over. I cook a couple of cups at a time, then put the pan in the fridge and use as needed. I like steelcut cold as well as hot. I've even tried it with salt and pepper (like grits). Meh.

Before I found these awesome Canadian oats, I normally would have McCann's Irish Oatmeal. That's where I got the soak overnight method.

    From their website:

    Quick Soak Method

One of the quickest and easiest ways to prepare McCann's Steel Cut Irish Oats is to soak the oats overnight. Before going to bed, boil 4 cups of water in a pot. Then add one cup of oats and simmer for 1 minute. Cover the pot, cool, and store overnight in the refrigerator. The next morning reheat over low heat, stirring occasionally.

So for me, at about 110 pounds, how much do I need to lift, press, squat, whatever, to develop hawt muscle?

What brand are these awesome Canadian steelcut oats? I think that my current batch is Red Mill, but not sure because I dumped them out of their original bag into a McCann's can that I'd saved.

I use my rice cooker to cook steel-cut oats. Since it has a timer, they're done when I get up. Whatever I don't eat, I reheat the next day.

Add a tablespoon of natural yoghurt in with the water - that'll soften the oats like you see with milk.

    What's your current bench-squat-deadlift one-rep-max?

But seriously, if you're just after hawt muscle, focus on toning/hypertrophy. It's all about lifting heavy, low reps. Try to hit the 6 to 8 rep range per set. Do maybe two or three sets per muscle group. In terms of weight, always be flirting with muscular exhaustion. Work out each major muscle group once per week. Stick to the big compound movements: bench, squat, deadlift, shoulder press, bent-over rows, pullups, etc.

If you don't want to fuck around, start here: NROL for Women — The New Rules of Lifting

As they say: "put down the 'Barbie' weights, step away from the treadmill, and begin a strength and conditioning regime for the natural athlete in every woman."

"Lift like a man, look like a goddess!"

It's a grocery store brand. It comes in a paper bag with a printed label on it. It's pretty low-profile, which is partly why they're much cheaper than McCann's. Much cheaper.

So tired and not feeling well. I'm going to kick my own ass tomorrow.
Got weight gloves, no clients until 3:00, and if all goes as expected, I'll have a kick ass workout at 7:30 and a few hours of basket holds from 3 - 5:30.
I hate the holiday blahs... I'm a Planet Fitness escapee... All Bailey's now. Stupid assholes at PF made me feel like crap for accidentally dropping my sport bottle and spilling water on the floor. I don't need someone to make me not want to go to the gym.
Those perky, skinny little blonde things that work the front desk at Bailey's still don't make me feel as irritated when I walk in the gym as the staff at PF did.
They just make me want to kick my own ass. I've got about a clothing size and a half to lose... maybe around 22lbs. But it's not about the weight, it's about tightening up. And surviving the holidays. I come to this thread when I'm pissed and I get a lot of motivation.

  8. noodle just do it, to borrow a Nike advert. Just fucking do it. Don't worry about the front desk help. Slim and perky happens for about 6 months in each of our lives. Their time as eye candy is limited. On the other hand, you go work out, every day EVERY FUCKING DAY. If nothing else just to piss the others off. ANDVYOUNWILL. What else do you need? I'll bet slim and perky can't hold a candle to you. Just piss them off by working like a dog, you know they won't. They don't think they need too, but we know don't we? Or should I just drink mower bourbon. But damn dog. Work it.. Arrroooo!!!!

Some of what has been sent I have no funking ideas what it meant. Mayb or not. :burb:

    Hello, bourbon.
Oh, don't get me wrong, I really like those perky little twits. They're actually pretty nice girls.
It's the jackass at PF that made me grit my teeth every time I went in.
I have to start out in the gym every other day... I do other stuff at home on off days.
I can't afford to pull anything or overdo it again. I get off my ass every day, though.
I did semi-slim and sorta perky once. It scared everyone, including myself.
I want healthy and firmer where needed, still bouncy in others.
I like the way I feel after a good workout... and I pay for it dearly when I do too much.
Fucking connective tissue. My quads and ass are already firming up, I had to get help identifying a new muscle.
I have pectorals... yay, modified pushups (still!). I'm nowhere near lifting readiness, but me and my Barbie dumbells
are working on it... safely and with a trainer's advice to protect a bad rotator cuff, fibro pulls, screwed up delts, and the hip that got a little
wonky when I broke my pelvis in 1993. But, like I said, I'm moving every day. And enjoying it.
Even the 120 ab crunch-like things I did over the exercise ball, on the roman chair, on the floor, and on the ab table-thingie. I was sure I'd puke, but I didn't.
The other day, I knew I'd only have 20 minutes at the gym because of a meeting, and for the first time in my life,
I was like, "Huh, well, at least that'll be 20 minutes!" and went anyway. Thank you, Bailey's.
And the Perky Brainless Wonders who smile at me when I walk in the door and pipe, "HI! Have a GREAT workout!!" And I do.

  11. Sorry noodle for that post. I wasn't that hammered but it sure reads that way. Bourbon infused fat finger posting on an iPad. Not a good combination. My apologies.

Still sticking with Couch to 5k...week 5 starts on Monday...eek!

I bought a new DVD to try out on Tuesdays & Thursdays...it has four different "dancing" workouts: hip hop, belly dance, salsa cardio, and jazz dance. I'm really, really hoping they don't suck. (also, just realized I haven't tried my yoga DVD yet...there's a 40 minute "intro/pose training" session that I keep putting off...I'll have to break it out tomorrow.)

Two things happened this week that I am ecstatic about:

    1) My body has finally caught on to the fact that I'm going to be doing this everyday. Holy metabolism jump, Batman! I've doubled my breakfast calories, added a couple more snacks, and bumped up my all-day calorie range so that I'm not starving.

    2) I bought some new clothes today. I think the last time I bought jeans, they were size 16. I went into the dressing room with a bunch of 14s, and discovered that I actually wear size 12 now. I could probably even squeeze into a 10, but they'd be tighter than I like. I had the biggest, dopiest grin on my face when I walked out of the store.

I was randomly clicking on fitness links a week or so ago, and came across a calorie calculator type thing. According to that, I should hit my goal around the end of June/beginning of July. I. Am. PUMPED!

fflowley Don't just do something, stand there!

I was certain when first reading this meant you were at home with a bottle of Irish Cream and a large glass.
And maybe a little coffee for flavoring!

Ha ha. I'm actually super sensitive to dairy in a bad way.
I miss Bailey's... Whatever is in it makes me pretty ill within 15 minutes.
I'm actually off to Bailey's Powerhouse Gym now.

I've been looking into gyms...I'd like to start getting back into weights after the New Year. I like the idea of Curves, but I'm not really into the "group exercise" thing...when I go to the gym, I want to put my earphones in and ignore everyone else. Planet Fitness looks like my best bet, but I'm a little wary after hearing about noodle 's distaste for the place.

Honestly, it was not geared towards people who are serious about working out. Long wait times for equipment, people on cell phones, and a lot of vacuuming whole people are working out. I'd rate the Y over PF. They get you in because of the cost. But you really, really get only what you pay for there. There was even a blood spot on the bathroom floor for 3 weeks. I've done Worlds Gym, YMCAs, PF, Snap Fitness over the years and now Bailey's. I really liked one of the Ys, but some are meh. Bailey's is my favorite in out of most of them.

Planet Fitness is the debbil. It is also the ONLY gym in my town and 2 miles from my apt... I will be joining a real weight lifting gym soon, or I will die of boredom. Machines are not made for Cayvmenn...

Somehow I've been keeping up with my food and working out and I've gained some weight back. I've been eating less than maintenance and gaining. It's possible that it's some kind of inflammation from eating gluten again ( though I've tried not to ). The left side of my guts seem to be larger than the right.

I don't think that I've been under reporting calorie intake, but I'll make the extra effort to track more accurately now.

Crap, the last couple of days I've eaten below my calorie goal, and have still gained weight... hmmm Maybe I'm sleep eating

Your metabolism could have slowed down. Are you eating enough calories as your goal? How did you come up with the goal?

Also, do yourself a favour and don't weigh yourself too often. Day-to-day fluctuations are normal.

Or retaining fluid? If you're not drinking enough water, you could be hanging on to extra.
My weight fluctuates up to 6 pounds of water weight... I am a girl and norgestimate-estridol is involved, but it makes a huge difference if I slam water. I'm talking 128 oz or more in 6 - 8 hours. Within 24 hours of rehydration, I can drop up to those 6 pounds most often. It's not a great practice, but I often don't realize that I haven't had enough water when I'm working.
