  1. What I've been doing for health stuff for the last six months or so: aikido.

    It's a martial art.

It's fun. It hurts. I think it's good for me.

Also, I can't quit....because my kids are doing it with me, and if I quit, my daughter will look at me with *THOSE EYES* and say "Daddy...why did you quit aikido?", and I'll have to say "Honey...your daddy just wasn't man enough.". And that just isn't going to happen. So. I guess I'll be doing this for awhile.

At the end of the conditioning kickboxing class tonight, the instructor was all like, "Yay! We're going to do something together!" She's funny like that. She makes things sound really fun and she's all perky about it. We never learn. The stuff she makes sound fun are the worst. I think she does this to program our brains to not hate her when we're done with her torture.

Anyway, tonight she was all like, "Let's do tandem squats!" So we all lined up right next to each other, facing the wall. We the proceeded to squat (kind of a sumo squat with just body weight) in tandem (as in: no one gets left behind). The person on the end counted to ten, and then the next person counted to ten, and so forth all down the line.

    There were seven of us.

    We did three laps.

    Quick math: (10 x 7) x 3 = 210

    210 squats.

    In a row.

My legs didn't understand. They were all like, "Yo, bro. We hope you had your fun, because we're done here."

I was all like, "Dudes, you still have to walk home...."

Yeah, that was a long walk, what, with all the arguing and complaining that went on.

It will be an interesting morning.

This I understand. Trainers are all the same - they say "let's do xxxx" in such a happy sounding voice, you convince yourself it won't be too bad. After yesterday, I'm struggling to walk today and my arms are killing - waaaay to much lifting of my own body :(

I've been working with a trainer for about 7 months now. The strength training is quite fun actually, but I need to integrate more cardio into my routine. I don't run nearly as much as I used to, but I will be looking into some local events. My friend has been wanting me to be her running partner. It would be fun to train with her for a small race and then possibly longer.

Since starting kickboxing in July, I seemed to have gained a few pounds despite having visibly burned off some fat around my trunk.

    Muscle'd!

I've been meaning to post here...I'm going on week 3 of working out and counting calories. At the moment, I'm doing Couch to 5k Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, and a low impact, easy aerobics workout on Tuesday & Thursday. I was taking Saturday & Sunday as rest days, but frankly, I feel like shit on days I don't get moving...so I'm going to try yoga on the weekends.

I don't own a scale, because I don't want to obsess over pounds (and I know if I buy one, I WILL start obsessing.) My clothes are starting to fit better, though, and I've dug a few things out of the closet that I haven't worn in years.

Time for a shirt-off showdown for the ladies, eh?!

    ...

Despite work throwing large primate-shaped torque application implements into my workout routine, I'm still chugging along with Baraka-like tenacity.

I still can't really see a major difference from when I started. I obviously look like the same scrawny bastard in pictures. But I'm a lot stronger now.

If I could just find a core routine that didn't make me feel like dog writhing on the floor with broken legs, that'd be swell. Any ideas, people?

I've been using medicine-ball-on-workout-ball. Leg lifts. Sit-ups on a decline-like-whoa bench. Those kettle bell oblique crunch thingies.

Dude, I'm getting to the point where I can't even hide my shit under a T-shirt.

I dare you to try this for a few weeks:

    Behold!

    A story of success.

The thrice-weekly pain rituals in the sweat temple dedicated to the dark god of the iron have paid off, people.

Yes, I measured myself tonight to buy some new dress shirts and discovered that I have gained 3" on my chest.

/feelin' all h'yoog, still scrawny and pathetic as ever

It's not about rehashing Cayvmann it's about just writing these feelings down and sorting them out. I have had a journal since June 2009 and I must say it's pretty interesting to look back and see how far I have come. :D

    Baraka_Guru,

Surely you jest! Every grunting acolyte knows that proper prayer involves spending just as much time on the squat rack as it does the flat bench.

Squat rack? Toilet? haha. I have to ask this Plan9, how tall are you and how much weight do you push on the squat rack?

The only thing that matters is for Plan9 to keep on trucking toward his bench-squat-deadlift one-rep-max goals of 300-400-500 lbs.

    Also, in other news....

    Basketball players wear them.

    Tennis players wear them.

I'm finally going out to get a couple of sweatbands.

Enough of this. No more rivers of sweat flowing into my eyes and messing up my glasses. I'm the only one in class with no hair on my head to absorb any sweat, and I'll be the only one wearing a freaking headband. I sweat like a sonovabitch too. I always leave a puddle sweat on the mat.

Oh, speaking of glasses—I think I'm going to look into getting contacts soon as well. I think I'm due for an eye exam anyway.

Heh. This is why I keep bandannas on hand when hiking. Bandanna = sweatband, hat, and hankie all in one.

I thought about a bandana, but I imagine I wouldn't like my whole head covered like that. Also, I wouldn't want to fiddle with it to turn it into a sweatband.

I just picked up a Nike headband for $7. It's elastic and mostly cotton. It should do the trick, and I won't have to worry about it falling off. Now I'm starting to look more like a Muay Thai fighter. Next up: arm bands. ;)
