I spent 2 hours outside this afternoon doing fitness testing with my classmates. I don't consider myself out of shape, but wow.. it sucks at times to be near the bottom of the group. ;)

That said, I'm really tempted to make my friends do fitness tests now.

Killer cardio workout tonight at kickboxing, including crazy agility drills. The striking combos at the end were awesome: unleashing fury two minutes at a time.

Exciting times as our studio expands. The second dojo has been open for a couple of weeks now, and the new class begin (staggered) in October.

They will divide the classes into 1) Muay Thai techniques and 2) kickboxing. They will also add a second tier to each for sparring and elite training. Currently only Friday nights have sparring.

The Muay Thai classes will be much like the ones they currently teach, but the kickboxing classes will involve hour-long sessions of kicking the shit of the Wavemasters they currently have on order.

    Like so...

Hmmm doesn't matter how fit or strong I'm getting on the bike, it's never quite fit or strong enough.

My new strategy is to ride with folk much much stronger than me and hang on for as long as I can.

Weight loss has slowed down. I blame the depression from current life. On the other hand I'm still 24 pounds down for the year. I'm 32 pounds less than my heaviest weight. Woot.

Taking a week off of lifting. My back and knees have been bitching for over a month, and I need to relax, then come back lighter. Maybe if my back quits bitching, I can restart BJJ...

I went to the doctor for my annual physical this morning. Fasting blood lab workup, urinalysis, and the female stuff. She said she would call me if there was anything unusual, otherwise I'll see the results in the mail in a few days. Blood pressure was 108/78 and my weight was 111, up a couple of pounds from last September.
So I went out for lunch and had a salad where they grilled (yes, grilled) heart of romaine and Belgian endive, then topped it with broiled calamari, anchovies, and caesar dressing.:) A nice colorful mix of yellow and red raspberries with whipped cream for dessert.

After two weeks away, I finally returned to kickboxing...to a class where we had our asses handed to us: all power strikes, and I had an awesome partner that I knew wouldn't let me pull any punches...or elbows, knees, and kicks.

It felt good to be back, and this week I'm going to try one (or two?) of the new conditioning classes on the Wavemaster.

Oh, and I signed up for the 30-day fitness challenge beginning next Monday. I'm not sure about a goal yet. I'm going to see if they can measure body fat percentage. Failing that, I'm going to go by waist measurement I guess.

This means three to four classes per week, cleaning up my diet, and getting adequate sleep...for a month!

Doing a three day a week powerlifting program ( madcow ). I've low-balled my weights, to give my knee and back a break, and it's a fairly low volume routine. If I don't get bored and start throwing weights on the bar it should give me a bit of a break from hurting myself...

Ok after stupidly buying myself a unitard for Halloween, I thought I'd better do a bit of work on my belly - its a little bit ummm fat! The first step is easy - I should stop eating 2 - 3 packets of crisps a day, and ditch the chocolate biscuits as well as the sweeties! Is there anything I can do exercise wise to help reduce the flab....... I have a week and a half! I have heard that sit ups don't really do much?!?

Sit ups may tighten the area a bit, but if you have fat there the best thing to do is reduce calories and up your exercise. Doesn't have to be very hard exercise, just more than you are doing now. An extra walk in the evening would burn some calories, and be relaxing at the same time.

Don't focus on ab exercises. That mainly builds muscle. (Look up "spot reduction myth.") With exercise and such a goal, you need to burn calories in such a way that encourages burning fat.

Cut out the crap, like you mentioned. Cut down on sodium elsewhere too, and drink lots of water.

As for exercise, consider doing circuit training. Something along these lines: Circuit Training Workout: Burn 30 Percent More Calories

Look up "fat burning circuit training" on Google and find something that interests you.

Short-term fat loss is doable, but it's a challenge. It requires strict discipline both on the mat and in the kitchen.

Be sure to get lots of rest/sleep too. That will help as well.

Don't expect to lose any more than a few pounds at most within that time frame.

Thanks for that Baraka Guru, I did a few 5 min bursts of skipping non stop on the trampoline today and also tried a few plank type holds. I think I will put together a circuit tomorrow.

Ditto to Baraka. No such thing as "spot reduction."

Kill the sweets, eat right, exercise regularly. Takes time, but works. Above all (and the hardest for me) NO SNACKING!

It depends. If by snacking you mean junk food, then yes.

However, I'm a proponent (and devout practitioner) of eating 5 or 6 times throughout the day. This means smaller meals than the average American lunch or dinner, of course. It also means doing what we could call "snacking reinvented": choosing, for example, a handful of raw unsalted almonds and a half cup of fresh berries instead of a grande vanilla latte and an oatmeal cookie at Starbucks.

It's about choosing real, whole, and often raw foods over prepared foods with sugar, salt, and who know what else added.

One of the tricks to high metabolism and constant fat burning is to eat smaller but more frequent meals/snacks. The idea of "three square meals a day" is old-fashioned. A few hours after eating, our metabolism begins to slow down in preparation for starvation mode (i.e., conserving energy and storing fat).

My rule of thumb? If it's been 4 hours since my last meal/snack, it's been too long, but I shoot for 2 or 3 hours between eating something. It depends on where I am and what I'm doing. Also, eating this way, I rarely find myself hungry enough to want to eat anything after 8 or 9 p.m., which is good.

Sort of; what I really meant was snacking in the evening. I read an interesting study on mice about an experiment where they got the same number and type of calories, but one group ate 24/7 while the other was fed over about an 8 hour period then cut off. Mice are very similar to us metabolically. At the end of the study, the group that was restricted was leaner than the other group.

So I'm with you on eating 6 times a day, my issue is not visiting the pantry after dinner.... I avoid it but it's really difficult sometimes. But my lean mass has increased and my weight gone down since I got religion about the snacking thing.

Well I snack all the time - if I'm lazy its crisps/sweets/biscuits, if someone else got to the cupboard before me then I tend to snack on raw carrots, or a big chunk of cucumber, or sliced apples etc. I actually prefer eating raw veg, fruit and nuts but I don't have a job as such and have moved back in with my mum therefore I am no longer in control of food shopping. When eating junk I often stop half way through the bag of crisps n decide I actually don't like it but will tend to pick them up later n eat them anyway!

I have a total gym that I started to use again. It gives a really good work out. But I find that I rather walk and be outside.

Well, I learned what a solid weak of drinking does to your performance.

I went from placing third in races to coming second last yesterday.

Must be early had to re-read that several times - had me very confused as to what you were drinking to go from 3rd to 2nd! Opps!
