Impeachment live updates: Senate trial begins with bitter debate over rules — CBS News

BTW, multiple small summaries in the link, so check them out.

Lots of maneuvering going on about trial rules

Just need a simple majority to vote on rules
Amendments and motions can be submitted for vote

And it’s not going to be a marathon anymore
    So not 2 days...but 3 days
    Still, that’s really short

Especially considering the consequences and significance

Republicans Block Subpoenas for New Evidence as Impeachment Trial Begins

It's like a plot you know already know that's coming...
    Predictable and a shame.

It could be better...it should be better.

Schiff mauls Cipollone on impeachment trial's first day

But after Schiff pulls a Mike Tyson.
Charged into for a quick and hard uppercut.

And you know what, they deserve to get hit for their arrogance and mental laziness.
    Keep them on the ropes.
    Make them sweat.
    Pain teaches too...bullies get taught.

    About friggin' time.

Chris Wallace rips into Lindsey Graham over witnesses at Senate trial

Very astute and well spoken summary
    BUT
Unfortunately, this is purely about politics
    Which the Constitution allows for.

So, more than likely still, there will be an acquittal.

However, again since it’s purely political
The House can still do another impeachment
    AND still investigate further

This is simply about being thrown out of office or not
If there was really a criminal trial, it would have to be afterwards...another trial.
But this time it would be in the actual courts.
Another branch of government would take over.

Same is true after getting out of office
There can be a criminal process.

“Bolton book roils Washington as onetime allies turn on former national security adviser”

Oh, god forbid you should tell the truth in DC

The irony of the thing, is that he was considered so hawkish and hardliner, that people feared him getting in the role...

And he turns out to have a spine, a soul, a conscience and stood up to Trump and his sycophants. And actually noted the truth.

Book or whatever form, it’s now out there.
You could argue he’s profiting from this
BUT you can also say the info, experiences and his perspective are now firmly documented, historical and in the spotlight.

No one can shove it under the carpet
    For good or bad

I have some newfound respect for him
Don’t agree with his values or policies fully
    But simple respect, IMHO

Senate vote on calling witnesses fails, ushering in trial endgame

    But, of course
The only question now is will there be consequences??

Not now, the GOP has sold its soul.
T will get away with this impeachment

    But later...
    Maybe another impeachment

    Or perhaps in the election

    Don’t assume
This is how Rome fell as well as other empires/nations

The US is no better than any others
    We’ve shown this with this
If not the election of T in the first place

A Senator says it well herself

For whatever reason, this has given me more pause in considering our political situation that anything in a long time.

All the horseshit from the porn star payments that flouted campaign finance law.

The castration of most of the useful parts of our government actions. EPA, HHS, Supreme Court...

Watching the machinations of people like McConnell and Graham, Pelosi and Shumer....

Seeing that even in our most basic, fundamental government functions we can't even be bothered with the pretense of having accountability.

I don't know. I can feel whatever sense of pride in the idea of America I once had - not our actual functioning, but the idea that perhaps in extreme situation we'd have a reasonable bit of functional operation...

I think this is just really really sad.

The US has always had its dark side...
We’re like a drug user or alcoholic that’s been sober for some years
Then falling off the wagon in some binge drinking spree

We can only hope that the US finds itself again
Becoming sober and making productive decisions.

But it’s citizens need to be responsible and aware too.
Not presume it will all workout without effort.
If the recent campaign and administration changes haven’t shown that their vote DOES count,
    Nothing will.

We need to put the right people in
No matter which party...pure merits and skills.
No celebrity, no spin, no rhetoric...pay attention.
We’re asked to vote every once in a blue moon.

Otherwise, you’re going to get puke.
    Which turns into shit quick.

    A citizen can’t complain there’s a swamp
Then vote in those who make it mucky.

All nations need to look in the mirror.
    Stop pointing fingers.
    Everything counts.

Let’s hope the next election is a sober one
And kicks out the swamp dwellers.
Especially those who shit in it.
And tell us it’s for our own good.

Gawd forbid the Senate should subpoena witnesses that would be the smoking gun. This fiasco is beyond embarrassing.

The Supreme Court let the citizens down during the McCarthy era*, they didn't have balls to do what's right, they instead chose to fold. Now the SC and the Senate are refusing to uphold the law, as they are sworn to do. It's not a trial, it's a political stand.

Our institutions are supposed to uphold the law. When they don't, what do we end up with?

What word or phrase fits the definition beyond embarrassing?

    * I'm tempted to include the Japanese Internment Camps during WWII, but those could/possibly/maybe be just barely justified. Or not.

“A permanent asterisk for the acquittal at hand. Dems sow doubt about trial”

    And they should...
    Because it’s true, it’s right
And it justifies the anger at the corruption and complicity.

    Shout it out.
Make it a mantra...a beating talking point.

Make them pay for their negligence to the nation and the citizens they’re supposed to be responsible for.

    This is now about power.
This is about curing a poison.

Both T and the current GOP leaders are a toxin.

The Next Trump Crisis Is Already Here

    No shit, Sherlock
And if y’think just the ones you hint at are what’s only out there...you’ve got another thing coming.

There’s likely so much many things that’s going on that we don’t know about.
Not just covered up, but simply unknown.

The man and his allies are like cockroaches
There’s going to be things dug up for years.
Some repressed as CYA, some covered up
Some unknown to most except the culprits.

The damage and corruption are significant.
The web we see is partial at best.

But, as long as we’re not nuked
    Perhaps everything is repairable.
But this will be like cleaning up after a debaucherous orgy.
Except we’re getting fucked without consent.
And I don’t want to even think of what’s covering our things...
