I'm tired of sitting on my ass, doing the IT thing. How does one break into the relatively more pleasant business of porta-potty cleaners, or septic tank divers?

Because TFPers are hilariously quirky. It's like a retarded ant farm.

Stephen King, John Browning, Eugene Stoner, John Carpenter, Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin.

Crusty Old White Dude Pimps of History. I'm sure between the six of 'em insanity has a summer house.

Indian butter chicken. Once you figure out how to do the spices for the curry the rest of it is just protein and carbs.

I'm not super into cooking. I was born with food apathy and years of eating out of a bag have turned me into a hobo.

Souf Cackalacky. I would love to live in central SC again. It's a pretty ideal place for shooting sports / motorcycles.

Housing is cheap. The beach is nearby (20% hotties, 70% fatties, 10% guys with metal detectors). No basements, though.

World War 2. The rest of 'em seem kinda political and the bad guys weren't nearly as evil. Odds of dying are pretty huge, though.

That and I would totally fit in with all the pale and scrawny white guys that you see in all those B&W photographs from the era.

    ...

One was a case of the man trying to hold a brother down the other was a man in a cowboy hat. I forget which is which.

I do know that JFK was a very important leader--perhaps the most important since Lincoln--and that JR's pride got him.

    ...

Apply to foreign companies that are looking for English-speaking middle managers. All you have to do is be willing to travel to shitty places for extended periods and deal with other people's poop.

I, myself, am trying to break into IT. As much as I love the travel and excitement of my current job, there is something to be said about being home on the weekends to play hide the sausage with the old lady.

^^^Depending on which IT job you get, you can forget weekends and most nights... Don't be fooled by the ITT and ECPI commercials, you will be treated like (salaried/no overtime) a 24/7 employee. I left one of those taking a pay cut, to work a shift job, still IT but less stressful. Of all the IT jobs I've had, I enjoyed desktop configuration and support the best. Server admin work is just a pain in the ass.

One of these days I may upgrade my deer gun. I currently have an 870 with a thumb hole stock. In IL it has to be a shotgun, no rifles. If I upgrade, what should I get?

Sweet, I made the cut. Fun dinner.

You know we don't use "retarded" any more, right? It's "intellectually disabled." which sounds like so much more fun in this context.

I disagree...IT has become an umbrella term for most computer work. There are quite a few that are non-24/7 roles.
Programming, although that's cyclical...and a PITA, especially since you're creating to others' whims and specs often.

Security, which for @Plan9 would be perfect since he likely has a security clearance and his background.

Program Mgmt, QA, Architect, Web Design, Configuration Mgmt, Business Analysis, Tech Writer, Data Analysis, etc...
There are quite a few positions that are not production admin or support, which tend to be the front line infantry.
You just have to find one that's not glutted with competition or dumped easy during downturns. (aka Web techs)

When he is uncovered on the beach how is KARR looking so clean and polished when he has been buried for two years according to the dialogue, (not checking online sources for more exact time frame, that is off the top of my head) and so running spectacularly even? You could almost think it was buried five minutes before the camera.....oh wait.....
In a related question, why not give a similar "bad car" to Michael in the first place and make the series even more interesting?

I did say depending on which one he goes for. Where I'm working (state gov't), most of the jobs listed are constantly required to lose sleep and weekends. Security even. I have honestly never met another person who is in programming, or server support, who isn't working way to many hours. That's inclusive to people not working for the same employer as myself. Server side (OS) support is the worst though.

Right now it's a pipe dream. I'm pretty dumb and thus I have no marketable technical skills outside of Excel, PowerPoint and angrily yelling at grown men to fix themselves lest they get their walking papers.

    ...

Well, yes, but I guess everybody here knows that referring to the network side of the house. You know, cords with plugs.

I've considered it but my peek-a-boo papers have lapsed and my background was, uh, I don't really have much of a background.

    ...

Wherever the chipper shredder that ate his body deposited the Chef Boyardee-style chunks of his double-tapped corpse. New Jersey, probably.

    ...

Speed, you're really bad at this. Fix yourself. The only reason I have even a vague idea about what you're trying to say here is that I know that "Michael" + four-letter acronym starting with a K likely equates to a Knight Rider reference. IIRC, KARR was the semi truck piloted by the evil Michael (Garthe Knight), right? Or was it an evil car? Hell, I'm not sure. I do remember being super happy that there was an evil Hasselhof, though. 'Fro + goatee + dramatic lines + forehead stare = priceless.

And the reason why Michael Knight was given the KITT is because they have a The Odd Couple vibe that is important to all canned '80s action shows, especially cop shows. Michael is carefree, gung-ho and a ladies' man, whereas the KITT is intellectual, smart-ass-y and has the nerd jobs like unlocking doors and scanning license plates. The A-Team is a prime example of an optimal spread of characters where each character's skills and quirks constantly create stumbling block subplot conflicts.

..and you've been married for how long? It seems like I should be from you, my friend. I'm only five years into my current girlfriend. What's your secret?

    ...

Slug gun, right? If you've got a Remington 870 with a slug barrel, the only real upgrades I can see would be getting an autoloader w/ appropriate barrel (Benelli, Mossberg) or upgrading your 870 with a better optic or fancy ammo.

If you're running a traditional scope, you might consider an illuminated reticle model. Also, with slug guns, you're likely to see better performance from buying the latest high end ammunition than switching your delivery system.

    ...

Mostly because you made some joke about me being carried off by geese that one time we had dinner.

    Yes. Yes, it does.

You should. It's a manly skill. I am thinking about picking it up again (did it when I was a Boyscout) when life settles down. Find a place that does lessons/rentals and grind away. It's like bowling but significantly more lethal.

Rifled barrel, fairly cheap Bushnell scope, usually use Winchester XX sabots.

I'm thinking auto loader. But I don't want to drop $1500-1800 on the Super Black Eagle II I want w/scope.

Yeah, but how often have you needed a follow-up shot? I'd upgrade to red dot glass and get some new BBs.

My neighbour offered to take me. She has two bows, and there's an outdoor archery range within reasonable walking distance from us.

    Not one time ever.

Which is why I have a hard time rationalizing it. 'What would I have gotten that I didn't already?' Nothing. Except it would be cool. :D
