tasineah ... Ah! Elizabeth Montgomery I'd forgotten all about her! Deeply embedded memory. I fell in love with her in Bewitched. I also remember being jealous of Darren, though, when push came to shove, I didn't like Endora's attempts to mess up their relationship. As usual, though, my feelings were romantic rather than lustful. Not even sure if they were romantic ... at age ten, I was thinking about her a lot, but in my fantasies, she was just generally around the house.

Hmmm. For Strong Physical effect, which, however, short circuited any possibility of lust, there was a woman who made Jessica Rabbit seem like Mother Theresa: the one and only Azra Khan. She was a customer at my local library where, at the age of 16, I worked as a Saturday Job. My first experience of her was of being resuscitated in the book-sorting room by fellow members of staff. Repetitions of this over a series of weeks enabled them to make the association of her approach and my loss of consciousness, and they organized themselves to keep an eye out and bundle me into the Obscure Reference Section whenever they saw her enter. Eventually, I had been able to piece together a dim impression of her: long, shiny black hair, eyes and a smile. A sense of being pinioned by her smile, engulfed by her hair and my soul lit up by her eyes. And not much else until shaken awake.

Around about 1980, there was Joanna Lumley. I heard the sound of her voice and WHAM ... though this time I did not faint; my ears did the equivalent of Tex Avery Eyes-On-Springs ... boingggggg. Elizabeth Hurley , some years later ... half a sentence, and I was swallowed up totally. Similarly, recently, listening to Kyra Sedgwick, I hunger to hear her voice. Eh ... there's something about how their voices fit their movement ... great fit between tones and gestures. Hang on - no, not Joanna Lumley. But Hurley, yes, and Sedgwick, yes. Ahhh Elizabeth Montgomery's voice fitted her movements ... such soft power ... even the nose-twitch, though rapid, was not angular. I never ever heard Azra Khan's voice.

Well, well, well, there's a surprise. A light bulb has just flicked on, and I realise that the one I'd want to be with as an adult is Kyra Sedgwick.

 

Thank you for setting my mind to working on a classic-TV list. Carolyn Jones. Elizabeth Montgomery to be certain. Mary Tyler Moore. I'll keep thinking about more....
