    I agree, it probably would have been dramatically appropriate if he had died. But the dichotomy of his survival was incredible. It was at once his last, great, asshole prank--convincing everyone he was indeed dead--and the single most human, selfless thing that he could ever do--throwing away his career, his chance at love, his entire life, to spend what precious little time he could with his only real friend.
