Politics The Elephant in the room...The GOP today

If I was the attorney for the criminal defendant, not only would I do it -- I would be subject to attorney misconduct charges if I did not!

If what is being reported is a fair portrayal of what happened, and the defendant was still living and maintaining his innocence, that would be unprofessional and unethical. But I'm guessing there's more to the story than this.

More than that, I would seriously question the actions of the judge. HRC had zero experience with criminal law, and was appointed to represent someone charged with a serious crime. What was he thinking?

It means she handled this case as an absolute beginner.

5 questions about John Boehner’s lawsuit against Barack Obama

What I want to know...why doesn't the public hold the GOP accountable for such a waste of time & energy???
    Another stunt.
Not work, not solutions, not funding...just another stunt.
    Like shutting down the government.

The people forget this stuff like a fly against the car window...of no mind or consequence.
IMHO...STFU and get back to work...there are things to fix.

The Dems are doing nothing but picking their noses & thumbs up their asses...but at least they're not throwing shit around.

In truth, the only thing I can think of that's rational in all this
...is this is an original delaying ploy by Boehner to extend his term as Speaker.
Not only does this jazz up the ultras-cons...but they're not likely to demote him until the thing is over. (suits take time)
Which could be until after the mid-terms...or even into the next presidential elections.
Giving him a chance to get rid of some opposition and gain allies.

A failed fiscal conservative and a warmonger. Sounds expensive.

    The GOP is doomed.

Unless they get into power...then the country is doomed.

Surely there are enough sensible conservatives in the U.S. to come up with a better party....

The problem for the GOP is they managed to gerrymander enough seats that they will always be able to hold a close edge in Congress.
Senate's a little more tricky but if they can keep control of the mouthbreathers it is possible to win or pull the margin real close.
The lack of a solid presidential candidate hurts but they've been able to prop up unknowns before and get people to rally around.

The big problem is they really don't know what to rally around.
Most everything they've been doing has been based on how much they hate the President.
It's hard to build a strong campaign on negatives.

This is what unnerves me about the current status of conservatism in the U.S.

When you have a messy situation or a void (or a bit of both), some pretty nasty things can arise from that.

What's at stake? Take, for example, Sarah Palin and her grass-rootin' tootin' good times. Even looking past her ridiculous impeachment push, you have the deeper issues of railing against centrism by demonizing it as "dangerous progressivism that undermines the very fabric of what made this country great: its traditional values," etc., blah, blah, blah.

So when things don't go well for the right side of the spectrum, you get a lot of angry, disillusioned people who can't even accept centre and centre-right platforms. They need to go more extreme to "take the country back."

Well, the timing of the elections and which seats are in play are what makes it the GOPs advantage this time.
Remember that only a 1/3 of the Senate is being elected at a time...those seats up for vote are in more conservative states.
And enough frustrated Dems have retired or backed away that the GOP has a good chance.

The problem for the establishment GOP is they realize they're vulnerable in the electorate's value set.
But they have to now cater to the more radical base, because it's they who vote in the primaries. (not the general public)
So they end up having to ignore inanities and allow "stick their foot in mouth" disease to save face and rally the base.
Making them more & more ultra-right.

    It's a vicious circle.

The Dems have got a good candidate already for 2016, so they're set. (it's hers to lose)
And the GOP doesn't have shit...and not alot of options that they can get thru the prez primaries.
So it's a matter of how miserable they're going to make the US for the next 2 years.

Yes, I said it...they are making the US miserable with their constant war of attrition with Obama and outlandish legislation.
The Dems are sitting on their tails on the bench...it's the GOP in a frenzy.
When they get sane, realistic & productive ...then I'll back off.
But right now, the inmates are ruling the asylum.

Then there is the continued attack on liberalism conducted by positioning it as a nihilistic force out to destroy the "Christian foundations" of America. (Not to mention the fact that it creates welfare leeches and is too soft on enemies, whether perceived or real.)

I understand your point, but there is a line where on one side you fulfill your professional obligation and on the other you act in a manner that is not ethical. Again, what I wrote was in regard to minor human errors and for me I know where I would draw the line. Specifically in the Clinton case I would not have represented this individual if i knew he was guilty.

Isn't this true - that there are forces out to destroy the "Christian foundations" of America? If true, why wouldn't there be some people fighting against these forces? What is most offensive, the "Christian foundations" of America, the people fighting to preserve it, the actual fight, or simply Christian values (assuming you can find two people who would agree on what those values are)?

My own opinion is that there is a great amount of hysteria regarding the role of Christianity in American public life. The idea of a separation between church and state is an old one, but there are those today who feel that such an idea is an act of oppression against Christians.

There is no liberal agenda to oppress Christians. Liberals generally support one's right to practice one's religion, and it's my understanding that most liberal voters and politicians in the U.S. are Christian. The issue is mostly regarding governance and the importance of secularism. The likes of Palin sometimes view secular governance in America as oppressive to Christians, which I think is grossly misleading.

Hoo Boy...do the GOP always have to prove the title of this thread??
OK, it looks like their latest gambit and fantasy...of doing a lawsuit and/or impeaching Obama is backfiring on them.
And they are in a panic to "control" it.

The GOP’s impeachment dilemma will only get worse

Why 'impeachment' talk is a winner for Democrats

Boehner refuses to say ‘impeachment is off the table’

Senate documents and interviews undercut ‘bombshell’ lawsuit against Obamacare

Face it, impeaching Obama is a wet-dream scenario for Republicans.
They've hated Obama from the beginning...and only wish they can begin one like they did vs. Clinton.
Now sure, the leaders and consultants know this was a bad thing in the end back then, it ended up hurting them...but the raging base LOVES the idea.

And the lawsuit...while it may only be a ploy before and during the 2014 campaign...and a way for Boehner to hold onto power,
they know if successful (likely not) could easily translate into an impeachment AFTER the elections...when they've likely gained power.

And it all feeds directly into the Dems fear based wardrums...which they're making money off of...and stirring up a get-out-the-vote push.

Which makes the GOP leadership panic...and back-off...but they still want to go forward with the lawsuit, which I'm sure they want more AFTER.
    It's like they're saying..."please don't panic...and don't look at us...while we're planning a sucker punch...or even a stab to your back"

Gee...don't you hate it when your victims don't cooperate??
Makes being a raging meat-eater so hard these days...

Oh yeah...and if you think I'm exaggerating...

A timeline of requested impeachment of Obama

Now, from what I've seen and heard over several years of anti-Obama haranguing and screeching,
this is an understated list...just the tip of the iceberg.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but even during GWB's and Reagan's worst days...I don't think I heard much of the word "impeachment"
War Criminal, Over-reach, Neo-con...sure, but not yelling to take them out of office.
And of course, Clinton was impeached...for a lying about a blow-job.
I'd think it would only be used for someone like Nixon. (who resigned beforehand...)

So, basically...it's now just a thing if you don't like who was voted president...or to undermine them, at least.
    Sad.

    Is this opinion true??
All I know is that the GOP has a tendency to stick their foot in it...despite all the warnings that it wouldn't be taken well.
