Yes, I've had one of these weeks...like the tech on the phone...
What part of "If you run this, it may stop functionality on ALL things connected to the underlying systems while its running..." do you NOT understand???
Repeat phrase several times...EACH time...to MULTIPLE managers AND the client.
AFTER testing it in Development AND Test AND Staging
NOW they're surprised when they want to run it against Production, that it might take down things.

Warning...even IF you've tested it against 3 other environments...there is NO guarantee that it will act the same...and may STILL stop connected things...and may BREAK certain things after unlike before.
THIS is what happens when you use a security probe software to ATTACK, test and report on your stuff.

Yet, this is somehow MY fault, despite even written emails by me to management and client stating this warning MANY times.
I haven't even run the damned scan YET...how will they react IF something goes unexpected??

Gee...and they wonder WHY I want to do this during the week when staff is around to fix, "just in case" (NO, they will NOT come in on the weekend or night...just me will do it)
OMG...people are lazy & neglectful SOBs (...even professional IT)

Fuck it...I've had it.
Told them I'm considering my options...and prepare for me to move on.
And hell, this thing above isn't even the thing that provoked me to tell them.
This was a whole other thing...don't even get me into it.
That was even MORE stupid and complicated.

 

It IS a pain in the ass...but it's a good paycheck.
And every job has it's pains...
They don't pay you for working hard...anyone can work really hard. (ask the people in the kitchens...or car wash...they work their asses off...I respect that)
They pay you for dealing with the things others can't deal with.

But my patience with selfishness, laziness and neglect has its limits.
That's why I live in an area with lots of options.
That and protection vs. recessions and "business decisions"

 

Speak for yourself. There aren't very many career paths that would allow an uneducated slob like me to make frankly absurd amounts of cash sitting at home in my boxers.

The trick is to get as far as possible from end users. Learning python helps immensely.

My skills are far too in-demand for me to be willing to put up with any amount of bullshit.

 

Actually, I've made more money that way...sometimes
Sure, most of the time, they surprise me with some stupid "business decision" (like...uhh, the subcontractor got into a fight with the prime...so we can't keep you since you go through the sub)
But here & there when I've left on good terms and there's no conflict.
They'll hire me PT, off-hours, ad-hoc...because they find they cannot replace me well.
(the next person isn't up to snuff, needs time to orient, proprietary things they didn't authorize time to document, saving their ass from a collapse after not listening, etc)
It's additional money...and it gets me better references, since I helped them in good will.

I remember one place after having me repair stuff across the continent...replaced me with 3 FT people at double the pay...after not agreeing to fund just me, simply FT at the same rate.

Hey, I'm not perfect or superman...it's just that the powers that be are oblivious to what they've asked people to do and the workload and how much environmental knowledge they have.

Sure, it's their game...not mine...go ahead.
But that's again why I live in an area with options. (lessoned learned in San Diego, where there's not as many and worse during down-turns)

Then again, I've had management dick me over just because of ego...many times.
Never for "at cause", never for bad work... (I wouldn't pass background investigations if I had)

It's just "the game"...

Even now, I've purposely put out an email to HR/recruiting after verbally telling my mgr that I was intending on moving on.
Just to get something out in writing, in case they decide to act before...and to show good intent and cooperation within the company.

It doesn't come natural to me.
But I've been forced to learn it just because companies & bosses have done stupid and selfish things before.
CYA, CYA, CYA...

Hell, I even had one company oust me, because I brought to their attention staff was going to the hospital due to workload
and they wanted to cover it up. (my own immediate mgr quit a month after even because of it...and just starting 4 months beforehand)

BUT, I will not stay at a place for stupidity...or just stability.
Life is TOO short for that.
And I value my sanity and personal time.

 

You should try databases...specifically DBA
It would complement the networking you know, in conjunction with the code.
DBAs straddle the fence between the layers.
NW don't want to deal with DBs or code often.
Devs don't want to think about HW, NW or DBs (besides they need someone to blame...)
There's less competition than Networking or Techs...but more stable than Devs, since they're considered admin.
Besides...all management always wants to keep their data safe.

MS SQL Server, Oracle are the main big ones (both free to download, Oracle straight-out, MSSQL has Dev version) ...dot Net is the primary for MSSQL front end....Java the primary code for Oracle (Unix/Linux servers)
PostGreSQL and MySQL are the main opensource (PHP, Perl, Python the primary for those...that I'm aware of...may have changed)

As a followup on my bitchin'
Boss had a meeting with me and underboss...didn't say shit about the crap, focused on everything going on and what he wants. (and of course, a documented list of everything I do until he gets bored with it...again...happens every 3 months)
But I've already had calls from recruiters.
And my own company's recruiter has already replied saying they'll look into other projects...including the one I want.
Hell, they may even get me to HQ, start helping on the contract submissions from a technical context.

Already let the subboss know, start having me document everything...
Don't know how long...but when I move, I move quick.

 

This is the fourth snow day we have had this school year. While I'm glad everyone is home safe, I'm going to be stuck in school until July at this rate.
