Do you know how hard it was for me to not mention arbitrary apostrophes?

Two weeks ago the dishwasher decided to stop working. Apparently it hated that my wife briefly didn't know better than to wash out glasses with chia seeds in them in it. Between work and other things I didn't have the time or patience to tear it apart and diagnose the problem myself, so a very good and very reasonable local repair man fixed it for a shade under $200.

Then the wife's car decides to die on her twice. Mechanic says that two of the catalytic converters are plugged up, which we take care of. I have him also do new plugs, wires, and fluids since it's at 90k+ miles and it's in the shop anyway. After about $600 (which is pretty reasonable for all that IMO) it runs like a champ for 50-60 miles then dies again. Now he's got to look deeper and thinks an emissions pump is also going to need replaced, to the tune of another $400ish (if that's all it is). It's also going to need two new tires as soon as it gets back to me, so figure another $250ish.

Saturday the dryer quits. The repairman (same as above) tears into it and says it needs a new motor and a new bearing, which would be about $300. It's a contractor grade dryer that is over a dozen years old, probably only cost $400 to start with. So now I'm into a new dryer for $700+.

And due to some end of year adjustments that had to be done (which I knew was coming due to some commission corrections and year long benefits being taxed/withheld on the final check of each year) my paycheck for Dec was about $2500-2700 lower than normal.

When it rains it apparently doesn't just pour, it hails.

Sometimes I seriously doubt my ability to be a functional adult. And it's really irritating. And kinda scary.

You can still flip the food debris into the garbage disposal.

    This just stops objects first.

It feels like January, damn it. I liked it better when it felt like October. *grumble grumble*

Edit: Well, no. I liked the warmer weather, but the bouncing back and forth killed my sinuses.

Passat, with 4 converters. Since it was one on each side he just put pipes through and it still passes emissions on the remaining two.

@ralphie250 I'm looking at an an old Dodge station wagon, a 1977 Crestwood with a 360 cid and torqueflite. Starts and runs OK but the transmission slips badly once it tries to shift int high gear, seems fine in 1 and 2 and will stay in 2 if I put the selector there. It has sat in a garage for the last two years. Fluid level is OK.
About what should I expect to pay a transmission shop to pull, rebuild, and replace the transmission? I think he said it was a 727 torqueflite. Thanks.

@lindy, a 727 is a very common trans. dodge still uses the same setup today but they added a overdrive section bolted on the back of it. anyway. a lot of times if you take it to a aamco or mt transmission or a well know trans shop like that they will tell you a standard overhaul is roughly $1500.00 but once you agree to that they will tear it down and call you and tell you it needs an additiona $1000.00 in parts and at that point youre screwed cause its apart. if you can find a well established local trans shop that has been around a while in your area they will be a better fit. you should expect to pay between $1200-$2000.00 depending on wether or not the pump is cracked. if you choose for someone to replace it the cost of the 727 can be upwards of $2500.00 by itself plus about $700.00 in labor just depening. you can call jasper Remanufactured engines, transmissions and differentials | JASPER Engines it can give you a better idea on a cost. jasper has an excellent warranty.

no 3rd gear or a slipping 3rd gear in a 727 is normally the high clutch is worn out. those are real real bad about the pump housing cracking causing a loss of pressure. the older transmissions have governors and modulator valves which can cause a lot of shifting iussues but not a slipping high gear. just make sure the tv cable is adjusted properly The LowDown On Stock Torqueflite Kick-Down Linkage correct cable adjustment can cause no 3rd gear, if it is close to being adjusted correctly it can cause a slip.

a big misperception of automatic transmissions is changing fliud if there is a problem. 90% of the time it is just a waste of money and time. make sure you are checking the fluid level once the vehicle has been driven a few miles so it has time to go through all the worm passages in the valve body espically since it has sat for a long time. make sure it is hot, meaning vehicle is at operating temperature. I hopr this helps

2006, with the 3.6 VR6 and Luxury Package #1. She mostly just drives it back and forth to work, so it is under 100k miles and has been paid off a while. It's in very good shape otherwise, so it's worth fixing and keeping a few more years IMO. I prefer to buy a one year old car (let someone else eat depreciation) and drive it until it's dead. Her last car was a 2000 Jetta that we bought used (1yr maybe 14k miles?) and had over 160k miles on it when we sold it. This one we bought 1 year old w/11k miles on it. IIRC, the only money I've put into it has been maintenance items like brakes, tires, and fluid/oil changes. Maybe a window switch too?

Supposedly VW has had an issue with the security system where it sporadically stops sensing the key fob in the car, which shuts it off. My normal mechanic (has his own small shop, and is mostly a buddy more than just my mechanic) said he could try to trouble shoot it, but that without being a VW tech and having their equipment it would probably cost more time and effort with him than just to take it to the dealership. So he dropped it off for me and it's at VW now getting diagnosed. I should know more by tomorrow. Hopefully it is just the security sensor or something minor that needs replaced.
