I'm getting a little tried hearing about how cold it is here from my Mexican friends. The above picture is "kind" of a joke but it's basically true. 28c is about 82f so that's a bit exaggerated but when it gets down to 70f look out cause the world is ending. I went for a walk the other morning and it was 68f at 0500. I returned from my walk and my SO was still home I asked why she hadn't left for school yet and she looked a little stunned and said "school's closed, we can't ask kids to go out when it's this cold!" So at 70f the entire town more or less closes down due to the cold.

I'll tell my wife that, she'll get a good laugh. The private school she teaches at follows what the local independent public school district decides.

Late Thursday PM/early Friday AM we're supposed to see some temps that might dip a little below 32F and there's a slight chance of light precipitation (it's supposed to have moved out of the area by the time the front hits). All of the weatherpersons are promising to "keep us informed about roadway conditions as the cold front develops."

It's funny, but given the way the idiots around here drive, maybe not.

This is just fucking great! Where to begin?

Earlier this AM I heard a noise in the utility room, thought maybe I had left one of the dogs was in there. Nope, it was rat...not a mouse...a fucking rat.

Just a few minutes ago I heard another noise in the utility room. Oh crap, not another rat!. No, not a rat. A rat would've preferable to......This time I find water leaking through the ceiling, meaning that one of the water pipes has started leaking. If I'm sort of lucky it's a hot water pipe (I can turn off the hot water only until the pipe is repaired), if I'm unlucky it's one of the cold water pipes (I'll need to turn off all water coming into the house). Just when we're trying to balance paying several bills along with the property & school taxes before penalties kick in. And I really seriously need to get shaved & showered.

I hate when someone is waiting on me for an answer and I can't give it to them because those I'm waiting on are being unresponsive. I don't like making a giant pain of myself to get what I need, but I guess I'll have to soon.

It turns out that I can't turn off the hot water separately. Managed to shower without too much water leaking, now have all water to the house turned off. Need to go take care of business, am waiting for some call backs re repairs.

My wife is going to shit.

That reminds me, I need to fill several large containers with water for flushing the toilet, washing our hands, etc. Thankfully we have a large stash of empty plastic laundry detergent tubs that have carry handles.

That's what her school does as well. When the temp gets below 18c all the schools close up their doors. I remember as a kid we had a family from the mid-west move to Salem. One day it started to lightly snow and all the kids in my class started talking about "snow day!" The kids from the mid-west asked if it was suppose to become a major storm. "No idea, why?' "Cause they're not closing school for an inch of snow." A couple minutes later the asst. principle announced the buses would be arriving to take kids home in 20 min. I think by the time I got home there might have been an 2" of snow on the ground. All depends on what you're used to. But these folks talking about the possibility of folks dying because it's under 70f is getting a little old.

Sorry to hear about your pipe/plumbing problems. Is it something you can fix yourself?

I dislike the word "sneaked." I know it's correct. I don't care. I prefer "snuck."

I could probably cut out a section of the old galvenized pipe and slide over it a piece of PVC pipe with plenty of appropriate adhesive, but my wife gets very concerned about plumbing repairs. Honestly I don't blame her. We had this problem before, actually very close to the same place, and paid a plumber (half-brother of a friend) to repair it off-the-books to save some money.

This is actually a-major-problem-waiting-to-happen that is needs to be addressed sooner rather than later. Our house was built in '64, all of the galvenized pipes/plumbing need to be replaced with PVC, and all of the faucets, etc. need to be replaced. About 11 years ago we received a letter from our insurnace company saying that when our house reached 40 years old we would be paying a higher rate, probable issues with old plumbing was one of the main reasons.

I despise trying to conjugate to lay. I can never remember the proper useages despite reading the rules more times than I'd care to think about.

I've always liked copper for intake and ABS for discharge. I wouldn't likely try to splice galvanized with PVC. Maybe I'm just too old school?

I've never tried it, but that's what the plumber did on the previous repair. My handyman guideline is much like the Serenity Prayer:

Grant me the good sense to see that some repairs might be beyond me,
the courage to make the repairs that I can,
and the wisdom to know the difference.
