For the most part poetry leaves me cold. If it's so convoluted that only the author knows what they're trying to say, I'm not interested in reading it.

My writing skills come more from many years of reading rather than from studying English books, style guides, etc. I sometimes try to re educate myself by reading useage guides and vocabulary builders, but it doesn't stick, part of my brain says if I'm not using it frequently, what's the point? I have a great deal of respect for the people who continue to challenge their minds to learn more.

What poetry are you trying to read?

Also realize that poetry is like the longest distance from point A to point B.

Similarly: people still paint despite everyone having a camera in their pocket everywhere they go.

It's often not about the destination but about the journey. Otherwise the poet would just come out and say, "I'm sad because my dog died." That's journalism, not poetry. It's information, not a shared experience or an evocation.

  3. Straight and to the point. I like that. Probably why I went the journalism route. Ain't nobody got time for that flowery shit.

My soul lacks the warmth of a wet nose..... Lame.

Keep in mind I'm not smart enough to know how to break quotes into segments.

Don't you have some sportsball game to watch on TV?

You know, to watch some overpaid men play a child's game that entails taking a ball and putting it somewhere before the other team does? You know, watch them keep track of how many times certain players do certain things ad absurdum?

You know, so you can get all excited and cheer when the team you arbitrarily support gets more *air quotes* points *air quotes*?

Yeah, you must have time for that. :p

You must really hate novels. They're so fucking long, amiright? :D

50,000+ words...sometimes over 100,000 words? Just tell me what fucking happened in the lame story already! (It's not even true!) :p

  8. Oh @baraka_guru

Don't get your cardigan in a wad. Just because you turned to poetry because no one wanted you on their kickball team doesn't mean I don't <3 you too.

In high school, girls like you would eat me for breakfast.

I'd secretly take my revenge on them in heroic couplets.

  10. Many years later I found out sooooo many guys had crushes on me that I had NO clue about. I was pretty much too self absorbed for any boy. I wouldn't eat you alive per se. I just would be way too into myself to acknowledge your feelings.

    Ha,

    ha,

    ha.

When I read novels very rarely do I need to read a passage numerous times in an attempt to understand what the author is trying to say.

BG, I'm glad that you enjoy poetry, it just isn't for me. I suppose that you've never read any shitty poetry?

On the contrary, I would bet that Mr. Guru has read a great deal of shitty poetry in his line of work.

My question was rhetorical. Yes, I'm sure that BG has read more shitty poetry than he cares to think about. He's probably read more good and bad --everything-- than most folks on TFP.

GERD sucks. I haven't had a flare-up this bad in ages. Thought I had it back under control after a bad day earlier this week, and woke up at 4am in terrible pain and unable to go back to sleep. No antacids other than baking soda in the house, but that's not strong enough to work today. I guess I need another round of proton pump inhibitors. I'm so glad those things are OTC now.

I'm so sorry to hear that you're having such trouble. I really hope you can get it under control soon. It sounds awful.

Besides, I've come to enjoy your posts, so I need you at full @snowy strength. Lol.

    Feel better!

Stupid YouTube comments on videos demonstrating martial arts techniques....

First, these videos are demonstrations, which are often contrived for—oh, I don't know—demonstrative purposes.

Second, the people with these stupid comments often don't look at the big picture, and reveal a lack of understanding regarding the techniques. Comments like "This is stupid! What about the guy's free right hand...and your unprotected face?!" don't take into account at least a few things:

    1) No technique is absolutely free from threats, and they usually therefore rely on speed, precision, misdirection, and surprise to handle resistance and avoid counterstrikes.

    2) You should never assume that a technique will always work; that's why you have variations and other techniques entirely, depending on situations and outcomes.

    3) Your free right hand may be completely useless to you when your left wrist shoots excruciating, agonizing pain and is at risk of breakage if you don't submit to the control of your opponent.
