    Man, @snowy. I have days....

I'm used to peer-reviewed scientific journals and these are trade journal pieces. Not that it's a bad thing, but there's a LOT of mediocre writing, peppered with buzz words to give it a thin veneer of a scientific aura.

    Makes me wanna scream.

Yeah, that's how it feels when I switch from reading developmental psychology stuff to educational journal articles. Some ed journals are more rigorous thanothers, but there is a HUGE range of perspectives in action research (the fundamental method for ed research, since teachers can conduct experiments within the context of their classroom). Education also loves buzzwords.

The problem with being a Makeup Addict is that I have a list of products I want to go buy, but no money to buy them with. I need to start clipping coupons. My list is now four items deep. :( Suppose it could be worse. I could have NO makeup

Perhaps it might speed the day up, if you locate someone to assault and generally terrorize.

As to the first part, I feel your pain.

As to the second, makeup is hardly necessary in your case. However you do use it to excellent effect.

A hundred jumping jacks on top of eighty squats on top of sixty lunges destroyed my legs on Wednesday. I'm still feeling it.

    Also:

An example of poor website design/content: The company's name appears in four different forms. Which is it?

    Seriously.

In talking about writing with my students this fall, one of the things I've come to realize that I embrace in my own aesthetic of writing is the "less is more" attitude when it comes to word choice. Now, I'm not saying I use the same words over and over again, but unlike my younger self, I'm not dropping 8-letter SAT words into my work.

I have a BA Journalism (that degree and $5.00 might get me breakfast at McDonald's). We were taught to be concise and to use words that most people could understand. Writers who unnecessarily use large words, especially when combined with run on sentences and run on paragraphs, drive me crazy.

I take liberties with grammar, puncuation, etc. that would make my former professors cringe, but at least I try to mke my point quickly and clearly. It would be pure folly for me to think that I'm always successful.

I don't bother with knowing grammar. I never memorized any of those rules.

I don't know what "preposition" or "predicate" mean. If you tell me, I will forget immediately.

But somehow, I usually manage to get my point across.

  20. Hey...I have a crappy journalism degree that I'm not using. It is a completely different style of writing than anything of entertainment value. Also, one must write to those on a third grade reading level to reach a broader audience than those who read for pleasure.

I had to put someone in their place when they said that an academic institution needs to write at a higher level. Nope. We would be doing a disservice to those in the community not as academically inclined as those at a university. Amazing things are happening here that are not just of interest to those working on a bachelor's degrees and beyond. But the woman was also a snobby uptight bitch. I refrained from saying that though.
