And because this is the complaining thread, I wish I could be online more often than my schedule currently allows...

I managed to guilt my wife into going to check on her parents. I'm still having coughing fits, I don't need to be around old folks who are susceptible to colds, the flu, etc.

She was watching TV, saying that she didn't want to to go the ceremony at the church. It's a VERY big deal (VBD), she would score major brownie points being there, and besides that the kids need her. I mentioned that she could go by to check on her mom & do her menus, then go check on her dad, and later go to the ceremony.

She went silent, which I knew in advance would be her reaction. Finally I resigned myself to going to visit her parents, so I went for a shave, wet & combed my hair, and started pulling out some more presentable clothes. She asked me what I was doing. "Going to take care of MILname & FILname." "No you're not, you're sick, you shouldn't be around them." No shit, I thought to myself, just like I mentioned earlier this morning.

She took her lunch sandwich to go. I have no idea if she's going to the VBD after seeing her parents.

I asked my husband this morning to clean the house so I wouldn't have to since it's my graduation day. He said, "If I have time." It takes half an hour, max, to get the major chores done. Did he do ANY of them? Nope. Came home from my poster session to an even messier house.

I spent all day driving to Houston, shopping for shoes (which I hate doing), going to IKEA (which also causes me a massive amount of stress), and running by Whole Foods for lunch. I got home 3 hours after leaving IKEA to find that the freaking lightbulb that I can't buy online got damaged in the move from Jax and I'm NOT going back to Houston. I have a cool new lamp with no bulb. :(

Why can't you get it online? Have a part number?

  10. Today needs to be over now. Enough bad stuff has happened to me today to last me to the end of the year.

IKEA is snooty. They don't sell their extra-special lightbulbs online. Or many of the cheaper items.

Woke up today to find the dog sick. Turns out he has Lyme disease, poor little guy. Can we just skip on to 2014 already?

    Why I can't use elance:

Job: Copy edit 5 to 15 articles per day / Pays: $1 per article (no word count estimates given) / Proposals: Most are from developing countries / Awarded to some desperate American

Job: Substantive, stylistic, and copy editing; fact checking; and proofreading articles / Pays: $2 per article (between 500 and 1,000 words each), each of which would probably take anywhere between 1 and 3 hours (or more, really) / Requirements and qualifications: [insert lists for a job that would pay at least $40 or $50 per hour] / Proposals: Mainly from developing countries / Awarded to some desperate American

Job: "Fast turnaround" on a proofread of 115 pages / Budget: less than $50 / Proper proofreading goes at a rate of 6 to 12 pages per hour

Job: Project editor (the whole enchilada) for "a different kind of self-help book" around 60,000 words / Pays: $20 to $30/hour (a proofreader's rate where I am), suggests it will take 15 to 25 hours (double or triple that is more realistic), and dictates the editor's workflow must be at least 3 to 5 hours at a time "for the deep concentration required" / Requirements and qualifications: [insert a list of strict requirements and expectations that for any experienced editor would set warning bells off regarding an overbearing, high-maint, and difficult client] / Awarded to a self-loathing American at $25 per hour

Job: Copy editing a 60,000-word novel / Budget: "Not Sure," but the turnaround time is 2 or 3 days (that's about 80 to 120 pages per day, when most proper copy editing goes at a rate between 4 to 8 pages per hour, the low end being for "heavy" work) / Awarded to an American who I hope was well paid

There is a lot of other stuff like this. I've seen some potentially decent jobs, but by the time I see their listings, it's been glomped on by tons of jobseekers, many of whom are "elance champs" who have all kinds of killer stats, kudos, trophies, and achievement unlocks. I'm afraid to know what kind of money they're making per hour.

I'm not sure any of this is worth it.

Which sucks. It's a cool site/concept. I heard it was really awesome when it was new. I guess all that cheap overseas labour really ruined the market. I'll have to stick to more localized stuff, and bank on my credentials.

Ok some of that is just crazy talk.

Our proofer really, really rubs me the wrong way. If you send her something she will look at it and send corrections - but then she will send about 8 other sets of corrections. My God, can you not just look at it carefully the first time and let's move on to the next thing?? And then she gripes that she's spending SO much time on this. It truly makes me crazy. I hate to see her emails come in.

It isn't so crazy when you realize $2 per hour is a lot for some people.

She's lucky to have that luxury. That's something I would never do.

Call me at work because a toilet valve keeps running after you flush? Really? Jiggle the handle or lift the lid and take a look ... How the hell do you get past 12 or so without figuring out how to fix a toilet?

SIL/houseguest whine, I've never met anyone that made it to their 50's and was still this helpless.

He's on an antibiotic for now. Poor guys can't get himself off the floor. He has a bit of arthritris in hid right hip and the Lyme infection may be making it a lot worse.
