    Still don't know a "twerk/twerking" is, and no interest in finding out with even a simple internet search. Who really cares what a 20ish year old "celebrity" does onstage in any event? Fairly certain that this Miley girl is using someone else's 15 minutes of fame at this point and needs to go quit hogging them.

    I care, mostly because it's stuff like this--stuff that seems inconsequential and dumb to older people--that helps me connect with my students. Before Wednesday, I am probably going to have to watch the video and see what all the fuss is about. On the upside, when I am tuned into popular culture well, the kids talk to me more about serious stuff, and I can also help them critically analyze and think about popular culture. Ultimately, while it might seem like a loss initially, it's a win-win.

    I can see that. I keep my knowledge of pop culture peripheral or weak at best voluntarily, but I also do not spend any time at all with younger kids in the classroom environment. I can name the cast of the Jack Benny radio show as it changed over the years or who starred on Fibber McGee and Molly off the top of my head but would get a blank stare on my face if you asked anything beyond the very basic information about the 47 seasons of Survivor or 38 seasons of American Idols. Or anything at all about televised lobotomies like that Jersey Shore show that made me wince just to see a 15 second teaser trailer.
    Speaking of 15 minutes being almost used up, isn't One Direction pushing the 14:30 mark at least by this point?

    It was over 100 degrees where we were sitting, due to the black seats. It was brutal. I gave up before the 1st quarter even got anywhere because I was going to get heat stroke otherwise. I could see the signs coming. It was awful.

    Tried to start the Jimmy today and it wouldn't turn over. Dead battery, again. Has been happening off and on for the past 6 months.

    Hauled off and bought a new battery. That was a lot of money that I didn't really have, but the vehicle is necessary given my schedule over the next couple of months.

    These days, my favourite category of "journalism" is "brilliantly written" opinion pieces that target, in an invariably sardonic tone, low-hanging, rotten fruit in such a way that at least implies this fruit represents the potential produce of the entire tree.

    Facebook is apparently a great venue for sharing these pieces of righteous prose.
