You can also substitute religion with:

    Desire
    • Ambition
    • Ignorance
    • A false sense of independence/detachment
    • etc.

Actually, it would be more accurate.

I think the point of that tired old quote is just that: it's been a very popular excuse over the history of mankind.

    Flag and crosses.

    ..

    Today's Complaint:

Neighbor dude's big orange cat loves me and hangs out on my lawn all the time.

The issue is, of course, that I can't steal him.

    ...

    Today's Other Complaint:

Fuck you, Amazon. I see something I want for $100 and add it to my cart to purchase.

By the time I get to the end of this cup of coffee, it's now jumped up to $120!

What kind of game are you playing with me, online mega-retailer?

I'd place greed at the top of or near the top of that list. Yes, I suppose desire and ambition cover greed. I either see or they stand out to me so many people that fit into the "never is enough club" and so many seem to feel gaining membership to that club trumps ethics and common decency. I'm always amazed when I talk to people that I know have money, serious money and they're talking about different investments and projects they have going that are going to make them even more money but completely screw over other people. Often, esp. here in Mexico that means exploiting children and or more or less slave labor. I've talked to people who tell me they've set up factories or farms here where they pay people 4-5 bucks a day for 10 hours work. There no minimum age limit but kids don't make as much as adults because it's usually piece work or paid by production. They pay their worker absolute crap, no benefits and they're raking in 20k to 40+ a month in profit. I really not a socialist. I understand if you have the money to do the start up and you're risking the capital you should reap the most benefits. But there's a point where you're nothing more then a slave owner. Many of these farms and factories out in the more rural villages her in the Yucatan are built in a way so they can be shut down and moved over no more then a weekend. I read a week or to ago where another greenhouse operation, growing massive amounts of high quality produce for upper end grocery chains, stopped paying their workers all together. They closed and locked the gate leading to the farm. After two weeks the authorities cut the lock off the gate in an attempt to contact a manger or owner only to find the entire operation was gone. Just a bare spot of land now. The article noted that almost all the workers still had vouchers that were suppose to allow them to purchase food in the company store. Now the store is gone and they literally have no food to feed their children, their families. The entire operations are set up solely to exploit people that have very few options. When the people are completely wore out and worked half to death they pick up in the middle of the night and move on to another impoverished village full of hungry people.

    You load sixteen tons
    What do you get?
Another day older and deeper in debt

How about "It doesn't take much for good people to do bad things."

That includes trying to do good while disregarding iatrogenic consequences.

Greed is basically desire run rampant. When I added desire to the list, I was thinking of greed. Ambition can be a part of that too. Good people can have desires and ambitions, but when they become selfish and, as you say, screw people over in achieving what they want, then it becomes greed.

I can't see how you can be considered both good and greedy.

Sit down have a glass of wine, blaze and bowl and munch on some 'shrooms. In no time your possessions might unpack themselves.

Hey, I didn't know the word until a couple months ago when I started to read the book Antifragile: Things that Gain from Disorder by Nassim Nicholas Taleb, but if you look, you see a lot of harm happening when good is intended.

And sometimes desire and greed are not for money or material things, but a lust for power and the ability to bend others to one's will.

  11. All of my contact cases AND my glasses are at the BF's place. I have a case that stays at his place, but the one for my place AND my travel case are at his place. I left my overnight bag from our Seattle trip at his place that contained the other two. Don't know why I packed both my home and travel cases.

It's mostly just inconvenient. I used shot glasses (clean) to house my contacts overnight until I go back to his place.

I need to find another gym. Joined this one for three months on a special they ran. Said they open at 0400 everyday but Sunday when they're closed. I've walked down there three times in a week now at 0400 only to have to wait 30-45 minute for a kid to show up and unlock the place.

Well not my butt...sort of my upper glute/lower back down through my hip.

It doesn't feel like a muscle strain...it's really weird.

WebMD says I have cancer. It always says that.

Got to the gym (well, Planet Fatness, if you want to call it a gym) and my knee started hurting before I got on the bike and my damned music box apparently has no charge... 30 minutes of watching HGTV while I sweat and watch gym nerds fumble on machines.... I finished though

I refuse to believe people actually pay the prices for patio furniture that I saw today.

I know one guy who isn't going to...

Oh, people do. My employer last summer bought a beautiful outdoor couch with lounge. I was shocked when I saw the price tag.

Here's what they had: Greenwich Outdoor Modular Seating - Grandin Road

Super comfy and the fabrics were extremely durable. I suppose it's justifiable if you are going to use the space as another room of the home.

  19. Keep your eye on it, the end of summer approaches. Soon patio furniture will go on sale and eventually on clearance. Got lucky about 10 years ago and got exactly what we wanted. Enjoyed it the following summer. :D

I think I'm just going to use the hand-me-down chairs my parents are getting rid of. They are in good shape, and I'll just buy a cheap table at Menard's instead of the higher end stuff at Great Escape.
