I think he's reacting to the idea that sandals have open toes and accidents on bikes, while wearing sandals, leads to road rash on your feet. I can't imagine wearing sandals. That said, I just googled biking sandals and can see many of them cover your toes.

    Ah, I see.
Yes. the Keens have a nice rubber covering over the front of your foot.

Ah! I see the closed toe ones. Still would rather have a shoe but they do seem pretty cool

Open toed sandals would freak me out a bit for biking.. I also wear full fingered gloves in the summer (very thin, but still).. Exposed skin = road rash potential. Can't get away with not wearing shorts in the summer though.. Hence the road rash marks I still have from getting caught in tracks last summer.

It's very hot here, all year 'round. I have to wear shorts and short sleeves. I also wear fingerless gloves. I have a problem with overheating, especially on off road trails where travel breeze is at a minimum (both because you are riding slower and because the jungle shields you from almost any incidental breeze).

It's the main reason I do most of my riding in early mornings. The air is a lot cooler at 5:30 am than it is during the day, or even at 8pm.

As a result of sparse clothing, I have some road rash wounds. :)

Yeah, I managed to have almost no scrapes when I fell the other day, since I was all bundled up :). Of course, I fell because it was below freezing and icy, so I wouldn't have gotten road rash wearing lighter clothes in warmer weather since I wouldn't have fallen down to begin with ;)

Looking at that picture I've just been reminded of the other reason I can never go clipless: Because of the way I've got a kind of duckfoot/bowlegged thing going on I can't pedal with the balls of my feet, I pedal almost right under my ankle.

    That sounds great.
Where are you doing it, and what kind of weather are you preparing for?

Heading to the California Sierras. They have had a very mild winter. Virtually no rain and only moderate snow at higher elevations. We are taking a motorhome and 2 mountain bikes. Probably will do most riding just below snow level unless the weather changes.

I could have used the bike sandals when I was out in Phoenix riding in the summer heat. Although you have to still wear sunscreen to prevent your feet from getting sun burned.

If I were riding in muddy, sandy, or wet areas, the sandals would work a lot better for my mountain bike.

had some trouble trying to get some bike shoes today... they claimed it's way too out of season or something lame like that. I might just go the amazon route instead however I'm still concerned about sizing.

You don't have a local bike store?

On a side note, I rode my bike everyday this week, in Ohio. Outside.

I don't buy any shoes online, especially bike shoes. Too many variables in the shoes. I always want to try them on and walk around a while. But, that's just my preference. I won't wear uncomfortable shoes.

I think regenerative braking and electric motors would work better. :)
