I've become fond of this one myself and wouldn't mind finding it under the menorah:

The rainy season has finally petered off so I went off road riding today with a bunch of friends this morning. It was a great ride. The local trail, which used to be kind of shitty, was recently redone. It's much (much!) better.

Sadly (amusingly?), on the way home I was riding the old rail line and stopped to contemplate how I was going to circumvent a massive mud puddle. I chose a line and then did a slow fall to right. My foot shot out to stop my fall and sank mid-thigh deep in mud. The only thing I could do was swing the other foot over my bike and right into the mud.

Ten minutes from home. What an idiot. The only puddle to be seen all day and I land in it. Superstar.

Many viewings of American Flyers and Breaking Away caused me to recognize that word.
    Thanks for the memories. :)

Anybody here ever ride a fat bike like a Surly pugsley?
They sound like great fun in the winter. I'm very tempted to get one.
I just so do not need another bicycle.

I've ridden the Pugsley and the Krampus 29er version we had at the shop earlier this summer around the parking lot at our shopping center plaza... but never in the snow.

Loads of fun from what I've heard from everyone I know that owns one.

I ride my mountain bike in the snow. It is fine if you keep it in a straight line and don't skid. :)

I just don't know how fatter tires would change that.

If the snow is deep enough, narrow tires, even mountain bike tires, will slice right into the snow, which means you'll need to plow through it. The philosophy behind the wider tires is that they can float on top of the snow—the tires' wide footprint increases when run at an extremely low PSI, enabling them to function like snowshoes, as opposed to skis.

Don't they also make little skis or skids that you can put on your bike like training wheels?

Not sure about that but I have studded tires in both 26 inch and 700C that I use on my bikes in the winter.

  19. DaddySquirrel is an avid cycler. He did STP (Seattle to Portland) last year and is signed up to do it again this year. It’s about a 200 mile trip that can be done in one or two days. He could do it in one, but does it in two with friends. It’s not the longest ride he’s done either.

I can barely do two miles, but he wants me to ride with him. I love him, so I will.

He’s worried about my balance due to the MS, so he wants me to get a recumbent trike. I tried one out at a local shop and had fun. There is a shop in Portland that is the recumbent headquarters of the PacNW and we’re planning on making a trip up there to check them out.

We’re going to do the MS Bike Ride this year (Yup, I’ll be asking for more donations) at the beginning of August. Should be fun.

Has anyone here used a recumbent?

I need a new bicycle. I know very little about bicycles.

I'd like something that's realiable and that I can ride across town to the office. It's about 10 km one way and very hilly. I'd like to keep it under $500. I don't care if it's used.

I don't know what size frame I need, or how big my wheels should be, or whether I want a road bike or a hybrid bike or a commuter bike. I don't know how many speeds I need or anything else really. Pretty sure I want wheels and pedals and brakes and steering. Other than that I'm clueless.

    Help.
