This is true, but I imagine they didn't expect it to come up this early.

Even for a party that shut down the government by holding the budget hostage, delaying a supreme court appointment for nearly a year on purely ideological grounds is a bit much. If Obama nominates someone like Sri Srinivasa the republicans will have a hard time coming up with anything resembling a reasonable objection, which means blocking it would be tantamount to dereliction of duty. Their base lets them get away with a lot but they need moderates to win and this kind of nonsense won't help them there.

If I were going to credit the republican party with some kind of strategizing I might guess that McConnell is going to push really hard to block whoever Obama chooses, then step aside as senate leader and let someone more "moderate" swoop in and make an actual effort towards a compromise. That way the republicans could play both sides, at least to an extent.

But after watching this party over the past 8 years I'm not entirely sure they're capable of that sort of subtlety anymore. In my more optimistic moments I want to think they couldn't possibly be that stupid, but then again...

I guess we'll see how it goes.

+ one for what Matian said.

Hell, the Republicans were promising to fight anything Obama attempted when it became apparent that he was going to win the Presidential election (before the final election results, before he was sworn in). That was the most shameful display of partisan politics that I had ever seen in modern US politics.

I've been looking for a graph like this for a while.
I think it proves that the Republicans can't run out the clock on the President.
Not only are their multiple cases of judges (one during Bush) being picked during election years but none are confirmed in less than 100 days.
Three times that just isn't going to fly especially if the President picks someone who was confirmed by a majority of Republicans when they were put on the lower court.

I believe their only policy/platform is that they are pissed. See Trump, Cruz, Rubio, ...

Here's where I put in my prediction.
Obama will nominate a moderate liberal that has been recently vetted and approved by Congress. Congress will use every means possible to avoid a vote, no up or down vote, no vote whatsoever.

President Hillary will nominate Obama for the post.

So the Republicans have been squealing about waiting to let the American people by electing a new president. But the fact is, Obama was already elected by the American people. Twice. Bush wasn't even elected the first time and he got to put someone on the court

The GOP saying that the president should not fulfill his duty and nominate a Supreme Court justice-- and threatening that if he does, they will refuse to hold hearings or confirm any nominee-- is such unbelievable and egregiously self-serving hypocrisy. They didn't bitch when Reagan appointed Justice Kennedy in his last year of office. Or when Ford nominated Justice Stevens in his. Or when Nixon appointed both Justice Powell and Justice Rhenquist in '72.

The Senate needs to suck it the fuck up and do their Constitutional duty in a responsible and sane fashion.

    Trump marches on...

    Nevada conquered. What's next?

I think it's looking very likely that he will be the republican candidate. I also think Clinton is going to be the Democrat candidate (unless Sanders can turn things around, which doesn't seem likely).

There is a good chance that Trump will be your next president.

At this point, I think it's very likely to be Trump vs. Clinton. It's going to be messy. Clinton running for president would by default come parcelled with a lot of sexism, but the tone that Trump sets, along with his own sexism, will simply make this worse.

Outside of that, this will basically be a wildcard bigoted megalomaniac running against an establishment centre-right neoliberal.

No matter the outcome, this will inevitably be a dark chapter in American politics.

You're forgetting that sometimes third party and independent candidates make it onto the ballot. Gary Johnson, the Libertarian party candidate and former governor of New Mexico, sounds promising.

I do think that the nonsense of this presidential election has shown us that the time is ripe for the fall of the two party system.

Honestly though: I'm a bit relieved that it doesn't look like Cruz will get the nomination. I think he could beat Clinton too. *shudder*

Deep down, I still hold out a hope for Sanders, but he's getting destroyed by superdelegates.

If Bloomberg runs, that could be interesting to watch.

The problem is Bloomberg won't run against Clinton, but would run against Sanders. Which will cause whoever the GOP candidate is to win. I would bet that Jill Stein in the Green Party would get 5-10% if Sanders drops out too. There seems to be a lot of debate on the Left that Hillary isn't going to represent them. I'm not sure it will be the end of the two party system though. Not unless the Tea Party also runs someone against Trump in the general election and nobody gets the 270 electoral votes to win. I'm not sure what happens then.
