I'm from the part of the US where a state senator is currently trying to pass a law that would make it illegal for teachers to talk about homosexuality with individual students. It's called the "Don't Say Gay" law. The kicker is that the senator isn't from the sticks; he's from the district next to the one I grew up in and is populated by not-stupid people. Yet he keeps getting reelected!

I like the idea of having a "secret life" or living a double life where I have a whole other me that no one knows about.

Perhaps his positions on other issues please his constituents. Perhaps those "not-stupid people" aren't single issue voters. LGBT folks (at least many that I know) tend to be single issue voters, and to vote based on how a candidate is perceived to stand on LGBT issues, not considering anything else. It's hard to fault them (or anyone, for that matter) for voting in their own interests. Others may have broader interests.

It's a good guess. But this is the guy that tried to join the state legislative Black Caucus then cried racism when they wouldn't let him in (he's white) and compared them to the Klan. Unfavorably.

He tried to get the state to issue death certificates to aborted fetuses. That was so that people could find out how many abortions were being performed in the state. Which was already a matter of public record, although the death certificate scheme would have listed parents of the fetus.

He sponsored a bill that would limit lottery winnings of anyone on public assistance to $600 since people on welfare shouldn't be able to use the money to buy lottery tickets. That actually to already be illegal, so it's hard to see it as much more than blatant racism.

His latest thing is a bill that would require a teacher or guidance councilor to inform a parent if they discuss homosexuality with a student. He came out against bullying of all children but said that bullying of LGBT kids is "the biggest lark out there."

He's also said that HIV is impossible to spread through heterosexual sex (he said the odds were 1 in 5,000,000) and that HIV came from an airline pilot having sex with a monkey and then with another man.
He was against postponing the 2012 Republican National Convention because of Hurricane Issac.

He's a clown. And I can't figure out why people keep sending him back since he's obviously an idiot. Maybe they'd just rather he live in the state capitol than around the corner from them.

He sounds like quite the asshat. Maybe you're right, and they just send him down to Springfield to get him out of the neighborhood.
I don't know, the_jazz, have they ever rigged an election in Illinois?;)

He's not in Illinois. He's from the district next to the one I grew up in.

And please show me a state that can say that they've never had a fixed election.

For that amount you can buy a hour or two of actual sex, not just simulated.

Against my SO's wishes I allocated nearly 80% of this month's income on a stupidly gluttonous holiday in Sydney for me, her and Nazi friend over Christmas and NYE. Couldn't resist the temptation of a scrumptious food safari.

She hates when I do these kinda things and it will take her a while to forgive my retarded-to-most-people spending patterns.

I'll make this the last exception for a long while. No more non-business indulgence this year, ahoy.

/what I get for having a cheapskate fiancee

I went to see my Dad yesterday, he is 78 and is really into his church. He said to come up, but he will be participating in some kind of ritual, I can walk along with him.
So when I got to the church there were about 30 people and a man holding a huge cross. My Dad goes "okay you ready to go?" I'm think to myself where are we going, Oh Oh. :D
They called it Stations of the Cross. We went to 12 homes with this cross and they read from a booklet. It was pretty interesting and I didn't really mind it much, just a little uncomfortable with the traffic slowing down to stare at us, while we walked about the town for 2hours.

THEN, we get to the church and they start a service, in which the bishop shows up. Okay my Dad failed to tell me that this was a really special day for him.
So I stayed for the service for the first time in 20 years. I don't know much about bishops, but kept calling him the pope, oops.

But in all it was a pretty wonderful day with my Dad. Nothing can take the place of that smile he had when he would look over at me, ear to ear, just beautiful.

So my confession is that I'm still not going back to the church after yesterday, but will keep the memory.:)

I had sex last night with a man I never intend to see again...at least not socially. That makes two times. And probably not the last.
Which reminds me, I need to pick-up more condoms.

The LGBTQ community also has a somewhat hidden issue here you may not be considering: How to find the proper balance of a cantidate that shares xone's stance as an individual on issues from welfare, to taxes to gun conrtol (and all stops in between), while taking into account that that cantidate may or may not be the same one that decrees their sex life an abomination, and would prevent them from marrying/cohabitating with the partner of their choosing.

<Simultaneously, I don't argue with the generalization that much of the LGBTQ community makes a stand on one issue and one issue alone>

Personally, I would prefer that these folks not elect someone who agrees with them but is a complete idiot. But that's me.
