The local berries are really starting to roll in around here. Somehow I resisted the temptation to buy a whole flat at market. I need to go out to my in-laws and get picking. Ours have a lot of set fruit but they're not ripe yet! :( I need more sun.

fflowley Don't just do something, stand there!

Our locals just hit the farm market yesterday.
Had a big bowl an hour ago after dinner with this luscious sour cream/sugar concoction my wife makes and spreads over the berries.

That totally reminds me of an old Jewish joke:

A traveling salesman named Rubenstein is making the rounds selling dry goods, and he decides to try his luck a little further south than he usually goes. Slowly riding through the early Southern spring, he pulls up next to a farmer with a huge truckload of manure.

"What do you do with all that manure?" Rubenstein asks the man.

"Spread it over the strawberries, fellow." The farmer replies, laconically. Rubenstein shakes his head and, as he pulls away, says, "You should try them with sour cream."

I got the first strawberry from my patio garden!! It tasted delicious. :)

Unfortunately, it was the only fruit present on my plants when I bought them last weekend.. so I'm hoping it's not the only one I get all summer. :/

What variety did you buy? It may just be that they need more full sun. What are the temps where you are in Ohio? Day neutral varieties won't produce if it's over 85.

I'm going to harvest my first vine-ripened tomato either today or tomorrow. More are clearly on the way. (Though this is probably something that should be posted in the growing food thread. :))

I got the Quinault variety of everbearers. The temperatures in Ohio have been inconsistent for the last couple weeks - it was 90 deg, but now it's down to the 60s-low 80s during the day. They are definitely getting enough sun, though - the East side of my patio gets sun by 11 am, and it lasts until at least 7 pm. I just put them in a couple weeks ago, so it's understandable that they're not producing much yet! I think I need to add some sand to my soil, though.. the potting mix I got for a couple of my containers seems to be a bit too wet.

When I was growing up we had a 20x40 ft strawberry patch. I always hated weeding it but it was worth it. There is no substitute for fresh strawberries. Thankfully we have found a place not too far from here that sells them in decent quantities and you don't even have to pick them.
