I heard about a recent Evidence Based Dentistry conference, Among their conclusions were that the only definite evidence-based regimen they could conclusively support was brushing at least 4 minutes total per day. The evidence for flossing was questionable, and they also acknowledged the difficulty of blinding and double blinding studies as a dentist trying to act ethically.

I'm interested to know if you were involved and what you think of the findings.

Excellent suggestion, though knowing this bitch, I'd feel sorry for the spiders and their inevitable demise.

 

Couple of problem with anything evidence based in dentistry.

#1 - A large portion of dentists are idiots. The same goes for medicine. Perhaps not "idiots" in the real sense, but idiots compared to where they should be. Lots of hokus pokus which in dentistry means "It works in my hands". For example it would go like this.

"Doctor there is no proof that shinning a blue light on your patients gums does anything to improve healing speed."

See the problem is that dental and medical school don't really teach you how to do research, about biases, or even how to properly read research for flaws. I did get a course to do that in grad school luckily but those are rare and honestly most people are not that smart. There is a line between being able to follow directions and how to problem solve. Dental/medical mostly teaches you how follow directions, and you have to be good at problem solving on your own. Since they don't test for that, and in fact removed those sections from things like the GRE, its a crap shoot.

#2 - Its easy to do a double blind study with a drug, its really hard to do it with a dental procedure.

#3 - I'm still going to floss.
