Sinus trouble - help!

    Here is a tip for pollen allergies that has really helped my brother and a co-worker. A spoonful of local honey it takes a few weeks, but they take it before the seasons start and have no allergy issues. My brother has been doing this I believe for 3 years now.

    Unfortunately raw unfiltered honey is on the no-no list during pregnancy.
    That's an old trick that I've known about for years. It really won't help with my mold spore allergies, but it has potential to help with other forms of hay fever. Since I'm experiencing a double whammy of the two acting together to destroy my life here...
    Trust me, I'll be consuming massive amounts of that delicious local honey when I'm no longer pregnant, whether or not it will help with allergies.

    I got the same results from regular honey, not just the raw and unfiltered. I couldn't afford it that way. :/ I really want some of that crazy stuff from South America but it's ridiculous.
    Tom Yum soup and Pho can help with the pressure and general malaise that accompanies allergies. I'm not sure which animal products, if any, you do consume, but I do believe there are vegetarian versions. Tom Yum is being studied for its healing properties, pretty fascinating stuff. It's the spice combinations. And, you're in a good city to be able to explore Asian foods... Or at least hit the Super H-Mart on the northern side of Houston. I miss that place soooooo much.

    i have had horrible sinus issues for about a week now. got a zpack and have one more day left. (today).
    I have been trying to figure out how to make a hot toddy the proper way with moonsihine. I have a quart of shine at home that is 140 proof but everywhere i look things say to make it different. ive always herd that a hot toddy will make it better but never tried it

    There are tons of different ways to make a toddy! The basics: liquor, spices, hot water, and sweetener of some kind. I like demerara sugar. Lemon is optional, but helpful when it's for medicinal purposes. Spices tend to be cinnamon, nutmeg, clove--generally, anything that would go in a pumpkin or apple pie is good, so also allspice, ginger, coriander. Even a little pepper can be good.

    The standard is usually to pour boiling or nearly so water into a mug with two whole cloves, and a stick of cinnamon, and let sit about 3 minutes. Stir in 1 to 2oz of your preferred liquor with your cinnamon stick, squeeze in lemon if that's your flavor choice, and a swirl of honey. Remove the cloves after a bit. If you're using moonshine, I'd suggest the flavors that go in apple pie... Cinnamon, nutmeg, and a little allspice. Cloves would be optional. I don't know that I'd use them with the moonshine I've had.

    Actually, I do it the opposite--liquor first, and then the spices. Many of the oils in the spices are soluble in alcohol, so it helps improve the flavor. I let it sit for a while to infuse before adding the hot water.

    Adding the water will dilute the strength of the moonshine, yes, as will lemon or sugar. Adding the spices won't change the concentration of the alcohol by much. Anything that changes the volume significantly will change the strength of the alcohol.

    The purpose of alcohol-centric "remedies" like this is to get you drunk so you care less about how miserable you feel. The only thing alcohol ever actually treats is methanol poisoning.

    Well, when I'm achy and feel like shit, and my head hurts, I'm willing to drink a little to ease the malaise. Not helpful to @GM, but I'll take it. A hot toddy has helped to de-crackle my sinuses and ease the sore throat from the drainage countless times.

    It's not a hot toddy in the classic sense, but when I'm sick with a sore throat or stuffy head, I like to make fresh lemonade and heat it up like a tea, then add in a shot of rum and half a shot of triple sec or limoncello and half a shot of eau-de-vie de fraises or de framboise (strong strawberry or raspberry brandy). Mrs. Levite, who loves all things mint, likes to steep some fresh mint leaves in with hers-- personally I can't abide the flavor of mint. But supposedly it helps.

    If you really really want relief for your clogging, and not just something soothing and hot to sip, then heat up low-sodium chicken broth with several sliced cloves of garlic, the juice and zest of a lime, a mash of hot chili peppers or hot pepper paste or the hottest hot sauce you have (at least a teaspoon full, more if you can bear it), an eighth of a teaspoon of wasabi (or a quarter teaspoon of freshly grated horseradish), a teaspoon full of fresh grated ginger, a small dollop of honey, a generous pinch of cumin and coriander, a pinch of cinnamon, and a tiny pinch of clove. Bring it to a boil, reduce the heat, and let it all simmer together for around 20 minutes. Stir well, and pour into a big mug, sifting out or removing with a spoon any large pieces of garlic or pepper. Once in the mug, add a generous shot of vodka or everclear (or, I guess, moonshine). Drink it down as quickly as you can, and have tissues or a handkerchief waiting, because it will clear out your sinuses and make your eyes water.

    EDIT: I should probably have made clear, all of that should go into enough broth for 2-3 mugs.
