I bought myself a new camera for Christmas, a Canon 60D. I hope that I'll be able to take better photos than with my Rebel XT.
I need to buy better lenses too.

I tried to take videos with my new camera and they were awful. It is difficult to zoom and focus and hold the camera steady all while shooting.

I came across this website that has a free guide to using the DSLR for making movies and started to study it. http://nofilmschool.com/dslr/

The first example of DSLR night photography I saw was spectacular! I had to post it here.

This is not mine! But I hope to learn how to do stuff like this.

Shot with Canon 1D MkIV with available light only:

I shot this picture of my lady at a nightclub in the meat packing district. 160 speed Portra was all I had on me at the time so this image is quite literally the result of a hope and a prayer.

Fresh picture from last night/early this morning. There are more I will get to soon enough with the slight processing the RAW files need.

And critiquing my own pictures that started this thread - taken with a Canon XS and not so stellar 18-55mm with a (I think) wide open aperture of 3.5 - they are poor to mediocre at best but "not bad" considering how epically awful that piece of glass performs in anything less than bright natural or studio lights. I shall have to try that location again soon with my much more workable current main lens and more importantly increased comfort level with actually using the camera.

After further consideration, the review board of one rejected all of the other pictures from this session as "unfit for Flikr" (with one possible/likely exception aside from the picture below). This one is slightly askew which does bother me but I can accept it as "ok " in this instance.

To answer the question that no one is probably asking but I should mention since I did include the details on each photo -
My ISO was fixed for this session, I keep that in the 100-400 range generally unless circumstance dictate for whatever reason. That is my "standard practice" now, as I prefer to emulate the film environment as much as possible and maintain control over all the setting. No sense in letting the camera decide what type of shot it thinks you want. The camera may bounce anywhere from ISO 100 up to ISO 3200+ depending on the picture if I allow it to choose.

Took this a few hours ago. Interesting note that no one else probably cares about - this was nearly identical at ISO 800 and 5 seconds.

That is the kind of view I do not have around here, nice mix of colours. Nice lunar shot, my attempts at those have failed so far.

I took these the other night. Not as exciting as Las Vegas but it was a nice walk after a hot day.

Danke. When I saw that sign on the street a caption of "When road signs drink too much" or something along those lines came to my mind instantly. Street lamps give an interesting yellowish tint to things when they are the only source of light.
That last one was on my way back home, one of those "ordinary boring things" you miss or do not even think about if you are not on foot. People were likely wondering "why he is taking a pictures of that?". The background lost to bokeh is the local hospital (ER entrance is shown in my post 2 or 3 above this one), and I used a tiny bit of photoshop to remove my reflection in the button.
