Not really. Sure, we drill for lockdowns now, but we did then, too.

So, a shy loner kid who was really good in chemistry, and smelled of gasoline wouldn't have raised any red flags? ;)

Back when I was in high school in LA, at the tail end of the '80s, such a kid wouldn't have raised a single eyebrow. We had half our student body bussed in from Compton and South Central, and half coming down from Hollywood, and if you weren't worried about the gang members walking around with hardware, you were worried about the snowblowers and motorheads on hair triggers and no impulse control. We had casualties at my school.

Shy loner science nerds, no matter what they smelled of, wouldn't have even made the list.

It's pretty normal for kids in my classes to walk in smelling of various substances related to small engines and welding.

At my HS the reaction might've been something like, "Poindexter had to work on his car? Hah, I'd like to see that."

    Public or private?
    i went to public school
    Enjoyable or drudgery?
lets just say it had its moments, but i wasnt the perfect student
Would you have described it as prison?
    nah not really
Do you feel a fundamental shift in our basic educational processes should take place? If so, how?
the school system where my daughter would go is shit, its the same system that i and my wife went to. it lost its accreadition a few years ago but gained it back. when the accred was lost the school system lost alot of very very good teachers and adminstraters wether it was due to retirement or leaving for another system. it still hasnt gained its repuattion back
Do you think homeschooling, unschooling, or democratic education are good options for many people?
i dont know what democratic eduication is. as far as homeshcooling, i think kids need some kind of social structure
What kind of education would you like to / did you provide for your children?
I put my daughter in a private school, she has gone there since kindergarden. I think it was a great choice for her. just MO. Yes i pay dearly and i know my taxes pay for public education but its just a choice we made. see above answer.

lets just say that i wasnt the ideal student. I missed alot of days in high school my junior and senior years, but i did graduate with a 4.0
