I doubt he had such a policy and that even if he did that it would be recognized under the Law of the Sea.

I must research this Law of the Sea stuff.. I know it's the basis for all law... but it just sounds so much cooler when you say, "Law of the Sea."

Lindy, do you know why Lloyd's of London was founded? To defray the risk of putting a boat in the water to sail to India and back. When Lloyd's first started, there was a 50/50 chance of making it back alive - for the boat, not the sailors. The Convention you cited was for when sailing was a MUCH riskier proposition than what this guy was doing.

Based on that, I don't think that your argument holds much water. So to speak.

If people are willing to risk their lives doing adventurous things, where is the risk if they are spared the consequences of their failure?

How does one more sailor making a trip around the continent improve the human race? It's not as if it hasn't been done before.

I disagree. This journey was undertaken for his own personal reward (unless he happened to be sponsored and some financial compensation awaited him at the end - either way, personal reward) If he was sponsored, advertisers benefit.

I would never advocate people NOT continue to reach outside the boundaries but one more sailor out to prove his endurance and sailing skills who unfortunately did not reach his destination? Pointless, in this case.

It's supposed to be pronounced "Law of the Sea...." while staring off into the distance.

I do know. The whole purpose of LoL (lol:rolleyes:) was to mitigate the risk to investors. It didn't change the physical risks to the ships or crews.

What if the cruise ship hit an iceberg on the way to the rescue? It could have been a Titanic mistake. So to speak.;)

In the same vein, it would have been Armageddon if an asteroid had fallen from space and hit it. Or if a rouge wave had rolled it over, it would have turned into a Posiden Adventure for Das Boot.
